how?”

“Someone signed her out.”

“When?”

“Forty minutes ago.”

“Who?”

Elena swallowed.

“The paperwork says me.”

Victoria stared.

“You were with me.”

“I know.”

“Video?”

“They’re checking.”

Victoria thought of copied voices.

Credentials.

Inherited access.

This network did not merely forge documents.

It inhabited trusted identities.

“Call the facility from here,” Victoria said.

“I did.”

“Tell them preserve everything.”

“I already did.”

Good.

Victoria saw something else in Elena’s expression.

“What aren’t you saying?”

Elena looked toward the technicians.

Then lowered her voice.

“My mother left willingly.”

“With the person pretending to be you?”

“She called her Anna.”

Victoria went still.

Elena’s hands curled into fists.

“Apparently Mom smiled when she saw her.”

Anna Mercer had not kidnapped Ruth Morris.

At least not visibly.

She had come for someone who knew the beginning of the program.

Someone who might know what Anna had done before the official records began.

Victoria retrieved the original audit device.

“Copies stay.”

The lead technician nodded.

Victoria turned to Elena.

“We go after Ruth.”

Elena stared.

“You don’t even know where Anna took her.”

“No.”

“Then what?”

Victoria thought of one unresolved clue.

Ruth had remembered Thomas arriving for a key.

Robert returning wet.

Anna knowing things.

Station Nine.

But there was another person tied to all of them.

Graham Sloane.

And the one place Anna had told Daniel to meet her was the old municipal records annex.

Victoria asked, “When was that annex built?”

Elena frowned.

“Why?”

“Because people like Anna reuse infrastructure they already trust.”

The lab researcher searched municipal records.

The answer arrived.

The annex had once served as the surface administration building for the earliest version of the transfer program.

Before Station Nine.

Before the contractors.

Before the system became hidden inside other systems.

Elena looked at Victoria.

“She took my mother there.”

“Maybe.”

“And Sloane?”

“Probably coming.”

“Voss?”

“Coming too.”

“Daniel?”

“If he ignores me, eventually.”

Elena stared toward the secure room containing the copied audit.

“What happens if everyone shows up?”

Victoria secured her weapon.

“For once, we stop asking them questions separately.”

They left through a different exit.

A court security team followed at distance.

Victoria had just reached the vehicle when one of the lab technicians ran after them.

“Investigator Hale!”

She turned.

He held a printed page.

“We found something in the audit metadata.”

“What?”

“One administrator account generated a scheduled command.”

“When?”

“Eleven years ago.”

Anna’s supposed death.

“What command?”

He handed her the page.

The instruction had waited dormant for years.

Its trigger condition was simple.

TWO SUCCESSORS CONFIRMED.

Victoria and Elena had activated it at Station Nine.

“And what happens after the trigger?” Elena asked.

The technician pointed toward the final line.

Victoria read it.

RELEASE MASTER ARCHIVE — 24 HOURS.

Her stomach dropped.

The audit had not merely granted them access.

It had started a countdown.

In less than a day, unless they stopped it, the Custodian would automatically distribute the protected master archive to every surviving administrator node.

Witness identities.

Locations.

Transfers.

Everything.

Elena whispered, “Can we cancel it?”

The technician shook his head.

“Not from the audit.”

“Then from where?”

Victoria already knew.

The original administrator interface.

Anna Mercer.

The woman who had built the system.

The woman currently holding Elena’s mother.

Victoria folded the paper.

Now every faction had one more reason to converge.

And they had less than twenty-four hours before secrecy became catastrophe.

<a
