drama.

Eleven years earlier, three contractors had attempted to seize the transfer infrastructure by forcing Anna to grant permanent administrative access.

She discovered the plan changed?”

“He found one of my dormant companies.”

“And blackmailed you?”

“No.”

“He tried to recruit I could no longer remove corrupt administrators without risking protected people.”

“So you created A.M.-2.”

“Yes.”

“And you used it to override Voss.”

“When necessary.”

“You put people on HOLD.”

“Yes.”

“You targeted Vale.”

Anna’s expression changed.

“I terminated his access.”

“Six hours before he died.”

“I did not order his death.”

“Why terminate him?”

“Because Thomas wanted to expose the program publicly.”

“Was he wrong?”

“He had discovered real crimes. He was right about those.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

Anna’s gaze held hers.

“He was wrong about what uncontrolled exposure would do.”

Victoria thought of the automatic archive release.

“And your solution was secrecy.”

“My solution was time.”

“Eleven years of it.”

“Not enough, apparently.”

Ruth spoke from the window.

“You always did think you were smarter than everyone.”

Anna looked toward her.

“That’s why I brought you.”

Ruth smiled.

“No. You brought me because Robert gave me the paper.”

Anna became still.

Victoria saw it.

“What paper?”

Ruth looked at Elena.

“Your father’s list.”

Elena crouched beside her.

“What list, house fourteen years ago.”

Ruth shook her head.

“No.”

“Yes, Mom.”

“No. Robert kept the wall.”

Elena her.

“She remembers.”

Victoria asked, “What is on the list?”

Anna answered carefully.

“The founding people?”

Ruth nodded.

“Robert wrote them.”

Elena asked, “Why?”

“Because Anna lied.”

Anna closed her eyes.

There it was.

A secret even she had not controlled.

Victoria moved closer.

“Lied about what?”

Ruth looked toward Anna.

“You said only four.”

Anna said nothing.

“Robert found seven.”

Victoria felt the structure of the case change again.

The original photograph showed four men and Anna’s influence behind them.

But there had been hidden administrators from the beginning.

The program had never belonged to one group.

Perhaps it had been compromised entered the stairwell.

Several.

Elena moved Ruth behind the conference-room wall.

Victoria took position.

A familiar voice rose from below.

“Hale.”

Graham Sloane.

Daniel had described him as a lawyer.

The man climbing the stairs looked more like someone who had spent years learning that other people carried weapons for him.

He wore a dark suit without a tie.

Two armed men followed.

And between them walked a third person with his hands bound.

A you.”

“Oh, it helps.”

“How?”

“The original contains signing authority.”

Victoria had suspected that.

The copies preserved evidence.

The original could still operate the system.

“That’s why you wanted Daniel to get it from me.”

“Yes.”

“Where is Daniel?”

Sloane smiled.

“On his way.”

Anna stepped forward.

“You cannot control the Custodian with one audit her weapon.

“You’re not getting mine.”

Sloane did not appear concerned.

“No need to be dramatic.”

“You brought a hostage.”

“I brought leverage.”

Evan looked toward Victoria.

“Don’t give him anything.”

One of Sloane’s men struck him in the you’re negotiating?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because if you could simply take what you need, you already would have.”

His expression changed slightly.

Correct.

Victoria continued.

“You need us conscious. Probably cooperative. Which means your armed men matter less than you want me to think.”

Anna looked toward her with new interest.

Sloane said, “The archive releases in less than a day.”

“You know.”

“I know more than you.”

“Then you know none of us can afford chaos.”

“Agreed.”

He stepped closer.

“Give me the original audit and both credentials.”

“No.”

“I release Evan.”

“No.”

His smile vanished.

Victoria continued.

“You release Evan first. Then we discuss how to cancel the archive release.”

“You assume I want it canceled.”

That sentence changed everything.

Anna stared at him.

Sloane smiled again.

“I want it distributed.”

Victoria understood.

“If the master archive propagates, every surviving node receives protected “You’ll get people killed.”

Sloane looked at her.

“People have been dying for years because you built a machine no one could govern.”

“And your sounded again below.

Another group.

Sloane’s men turned.

Daniel appeared first.

Sarah behind him.

And behind them, unexpectedly, Commissioner Adrian throat.

“Evan.”

Her brother looked up.

Sloane’s man tightened his grip.

Voss stared at Anna.

“You’re still doing this.”

Anna replied, “So are you.”

Daniel looked at Victoria.

“You have the audit?”

“Yes.”

“Did you copy it?”

“Yes.”

Relief crossed his face.

Good.

At least one truth survived.

Sloane raised his voice.

“Everyone here understands moved toward the administrator terminal.

“We can stop it.”

Sloane lifted a hand.

His armed men raised their weapons.

“No.”

Sarah stared at him.

“You said if Daniel brought you here, you’d let Evan go.”

Daniel turned sharply.

“You promised.”

Sloane looked almost bored.

“I said I would release him when the exchange was complete.”

Victoria watched Daniel’s face.

Betrayal hurt most when it confirmed what you already feared.

Anna asked, “What exchange?”

Sloane looked at Victoria.

“The audit.”

Then Elena.

“The successor credentials.”

Then Voss.

“And his master authorization key.”

Voss laughed without humor.

“You think I brought it?”

“I know you did.”

Voss’s expression changed.

Sloane had information from inside his movements too.

The room tightened.

Victoria suddenly understood the true value of gathering everyone here.

Every faction believed someone else was the leak.

Maybe that assumption was wrong.

Maybe the Custodian itself had been reporting their movements through compromised devices and inherited access.

She looked toward Anna’s terminal.

“Disconnect that.”

Anna frowned.

“Why?”

“Now.”

Anna pulled its network module.

The screen went dark.

Sloane looked irritated.

Useful.

Victoria said, “Everyone turn off every phone, radio and networked device.”

Sloane’s men did not move.

“Why?” Voss asked.

“Because we keep blaming people for information the system itself may be transmitting.”

Anna went still.

“You think the Custodian has active telemetry.”

“I think somebody designed it to survive administrators.”

Anna looked genuinely disturbed.

“I didn’t.”

“Then one of your seven did.”

Ruth, behind the wall, spoke suddenly.

“Edwin.”

Every person turned.

Ruth stepped into view.

Elena tried to guide her back.

“Mom—”

Ruth pointed toward Anna.

“You forgot Edwin.”

Anna’s face emptied.

Victoria asked, “Who is Edwin?”

Anna whispered the answer.

“Edwin Sloane.”

Graham stopped moving.

Daniel looked at him.

“Your father?”

Sloane did not answer.

Anna stared as if seeing the past reopen in front of her.

“Edwin helped design communications continuity.”

Victoria looked from Anna to Graham.

“The Custodian telemetry.”

Anna nodded slowly.

“He could have added it.”

Graham’s calm finally fractured.

“My father died twenty years ago.”

Ruth shook her head.

“He was a bad man.”

Sloane looked at her with open contempt.

“Your husband wasn’t exactly a saint.”

“No,” Ruth said.

The simplicity silenced him.

Then she added, “But Robert was afraid of Edwin.”

Anna moved toward the table.

“Ruth, where is the list?”

“The wall.”

“What else did Robert write?”

Ruth frowned in concentration.

“Elena’s name.”

Elena froze.

“Mine?”

Ruth nodded.

“And the other girl.”

Victoria knew before asking.

“Me?”

Ruth looked at her.

“No.”

A chill passed through Victoria.

“Then who?”

Ruth smiled faintly.

“Anna’s daughter.”

Anna stopped breathing.

Victoria stared at her.

“You have a daughter?”

Anna’s composure vanished.

“No.”

Ruth shook her head.

“Yes.”

“Ruth.”

“You told everyone she died.”

Sloane’s face changed too.

He knew something.

Victoria saw it.

“Who is she?”

Anna whispered, “She was an infant.”

“What happened?”

“She was taken during the first leak.”

“Taken by whom?”

“I never knew.”

Ruth said, “Edwin knew.”

Graham looked toward the door.

That was the first time Victoria saw him consider escape.

She raised her weapon.

“Stay.”

He stared at her.

Victoria understood.

Edwin Sloane.

Anna’s missing daughter.

A hidden administrator.

The altered Custodian.

The mystery had started long before Daniel Cross ever found a ledger.

And Graham knew why.

“Tell us,” Victoria said.

Sloane looked toward Evan, then Daniel, then Anna.

Finally he smiled without warmth.

“You’re going to wish Ruth had forgotten.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: Graham Sloane Revealed the Custodian’s Hidden
