Noah left his backpack on the floor instead of keeping it within reach. Tyler complained about homework with the solemn outrage of an eight-year-old facing historic injustice. Emily began working again, cautiously at first, then with enough confidence to complain about traffic and deadlines instead of court hearings and investigators.

That was why the photograph felt so wrong in my hand.

I found it on a Saturday morning while cleaning the hall closet. A cardboard box had split along the bottom, scattering old birthday decorations, winter gloves, receipts, and a stack of photographs across the floor.

Most were mine.

One was not.

It showed Daniel Reynolds standing beside the lake house.

I sat back on my heels.

The photograph had been taken years before I knew Daniel existed.
