A boy was born. The mother disappeared soon afterward.

Officially, Elias entered foster care.

Unofficially, he became one of Westbridge’s earliest identity-transfer subjects.

“Why?”

“Because his mother knew what Westbridge was before anyone called it Westbridge.”

Collins stepped closer to the observation glass.

Noah asked, “Who was she?”

“Rebecca Shaw.”

That name meant something to Collins.

She left the room.

Mark watched her go through the one-way glass as though he somehow knew.

“She remembers.”

“What?”

“Rebecca was one of the accountants who built the first shell companies.”

Noah’s grip tightened.

“So Ethan was Elias?”

“Yes.”

“Why call him Ethan?”

“Because Elias Reynolds had legally stopped existing.”

The explanation reached backward decades.

Westbridge had not begun as a sophisticated identity network.

It started with financial fraud.

Rebecca Shaw discovered executives were moving money through charities intended for displaced families and vulnerable children. When she threatened to expose them, they used access to social-service databases to erase her trail.

Then they targeted her son.

His birth registration was altered.

Guardianship records were rewritten.

Elias became someone else.

Then someone else again.

Daniel discovered the existence of his half brother only after finding Rebecca’s name inside the financial records.

“He tracked him for years,” Mark said.

“Why didn’t he rescue him?”

“He tried.”

“What happened?”

“Every time Daniel got close, someone transferred Elias.”

“Who?”

Mark’s eyes shifted.

“That is the part your father never solved.”

The meeting ended when Mark requested a break.

Noah walked out without looking back.

Emily met him in the hallway.

“You okay?”

“No.”

It was a good answer.

Not dramatic.

Not reassuring.

True.

Collins returned carrying a digital file.

Rebecca Shaw had died twenty years earlier.

Officially accidental carbon-monoxide poisoning.

The investigation had been minimal.

Her surviving documents, however, established something Daniel had never known.

Rebecca had not been merely an accountant.

She had created the first recovery ledger.

Before Westbridge transformed stolen identities into a business, she copied original records.

“She was trying to preserve people,” Emily said.

“Exactly.”

“Like Daniel later did.”

Collins nodded.

“He may have inherited the idea without knowing it.”

Noah sat at the end of the conference table.

“Where did she transfers.

Rebecca’s former employers.

Most leads were dead.

Then Kate noticed a phrase repeated in Daniel’s notes.

North room.

It appeared beside Subject Twelve.

Beside Rebecca.

And beside a property address no one had previously connected to Westbridge.

A church.

Saint Matthew’s Mission had closed fifteen years earlier.

The building remained standing.

We went the next morning.

The place smelled of damp plaster and dust.

Sunlight entered through cracked stained glass.

Collins’s team searched carefully.

The north room turned out to be a former nursery.

Peeling stars covered the walls.

Noah stood beneath them.

“Dad came here?”

“Probably.”

Tyler, now nineteen and supposedly present only because he had driven us, pointed toward a baseboard.

“That’s newer than the wall.”

We looked.

One length of wood was a different shade.

An agent removed it.

Behind the board was a narrow metal compartment.

Inside lay a ledger wrapped in plastic.

Rebecca’s handwriting covered hundreds of pages.

Names.

Birth dates.

Original parents.

Replacement identities.

Transfers.

At the back were two pages labeled ELIAS REYNOLDS.

The final entry was dated after Daniel’s death.

TRANSFER AUTHORIZED — M.H.

Collins went still.

“M.H.”

Emily saw her expression.

“You know who that is.”

Collins called.

She had found something in Daniel’s old correspondence.

A birthday card sent to him one year before his death.

No signature.

Only a sentence.

Still safe.
