By the time I reached the property, the sky had turned the dull violet color that comes just before night.

I parked beneath the old maples and remained behind the wheel.

The house looked smaller than I remembered.

Daniel hated it.

He called it damp, isolated and depressing.

My father had called it quiet.

At seventeen, I had learned to drive a boat from the narrow dock behind the house. At twenty-two, I had sat on the porch with Dad while deciding whether to accept my first accounting job. Years later, after his funeral, I had come here alone and discovered that silence could hurt physically.

Tonight it felt protective.

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I watched it stop.

Then start again.

A message appeared.

Where are you?

Another followed.

Claire, don't make this worse.

The third arrived less than a minute later.

We need to talk.

I carried my laptop inside.

The house smelled of cedar, old books and the faint mineral scent of unused plumbing.
