Yvette was still facing me, shoulders square, waiting as though she expected a rebuttal. Nolan sat beside my niece, one palm flat against the edge of the table.

The children had noticed the adults were quiet.

That changed the atmosphere faster than anything else could have.

My niece looked from her father to her mother.

“Are we doing cake?”

Mom answered too quickly.

“Yes. Absolutely.”

She clapped her hands once.

“Cake.”

The word released the younger kids. They surged toward the candles, arguing over who got to stand closest. Dad moved around the table and reached for the lighter.

Yvette turned away from me as though the argument had been settled.

Grant did not.

He kept looking at me.

There was a question in his face.

Not whether I knew.

He had already understood that.

The question was whether I would force him to say it now.

I could have.

Part of me wanted to.

For months he had let Yvette build plans around something that clearly was not true. Whatever explanation existed, he had allowed the lie to grow large enough to include a move, a new house, their daughter’s school, and the future Yvette thought had already begun.

But their daughter was standing three feet away in a paper crown.

So I looked at Grant and shook my head once.

Not here.

Relief crossed his face so violently that it almost made me angrier.

Dad lit the candles.

Everybody sang.

Nolan’s voice disappeared among the others, which I knew he preferred after what had just happened. He sang without hesitation, one hand resting on the table while my niece leaned forward and tried to blow out all eight candles in a single breath.

She missed two.

Grant bent beside her.

“Again.”

She inhaled dramatically and extinguished them.

The adults cheered.

Yvette kissed the top of her daughter’s head.

For a moment she looked exactly like herself before all of this had started. Happy. Tired. Proud. Completely unaware that the man kneeling beside her was carrying a secret large enough to overturn the entire day.

Cake was cut.

Plates were distributed.

Nobody mentioned the argument.

That silence did not feel peaceful.

It felt temporary.

Nolan ate half a slice of chocolate cake before pushing his plate away.

“You want to go?” I asked quietly.

He glanced toward my niece.

“Not yet.”

“You don’t have to stay because of me.”

“I’m not.”

His voice was more strained now.

“Because of her.”

I followed his gaze.

My niece was opening presents.

She had no idea her mother had just used her uncle’s speech as evidence in an argument about marriage. She had no idea her father had spent the morning moving boxes to a hidden apartment.

She was holding up a set of markers and shouting, “A hundred colors!”

Nolan smiled.

“We stay until she’s done.”

“Okay.”

Across the table, Yvette watched us whisper.

Her expression hardened.

I saw the conclusion forming before she said anything.

I prepared myself.

Grant noticed too.

“Yvette,” he said.

She looked at him.

“Can I talk to you?”

Her annoyance shifted immediately.

“Now?”

“Yeah.”

“We have people here.”

“It’ll take a minute.”

Something in his tone finally reached her.

The impatience left her face.

“What’s wrong?”

Grant glanced toward their daughter.

“Inside.”

Yvette followed his eyes, then looked at me.

“What did she say to you?”

Grant shut his eyes briefly.

“She didn’t say anything.”

“Then why are you acting like this?”

“Please.”

There it was again.

The same word he had been using for months.

Please.

A request without explanation.

Yvette folded her arms.

“If this is about what I said—”

“It’s not.”

Nolan’s hand found mine under the table.

I squeezed his fingers.

Grant stepped closer to his wife.

“Can we go inside?”

Yvette studied him.

Then, perhaps because everyone else was pretending not to listen, she gave a tight nod.

“Fine.”

They walked toward the house.

Mom waited until the kitchen door closed behind them.

Then she looked at me.

“What is going on?”

“I don’t know everything.”

“That is not reassuring.”

Dad joined us carrying the knife he had used for the cake.

“Do we need to send everybody home?”

“No,” I said.

Nolan wiped frosting from his thumb.

“Probably.”

I looked at him.

He shrugged.

“You said honesty.”

Mom sat down hard.

“What do you know?”

I glanced toward the kitchen window.

Grant and Yvette were visible only as blurred movement through the glare.

“This morning, we helped Grant move boxes.”

Mom nodded.

“He told us.”

“To an apartment across town.”

Her expression changed.

Dad stopped moving.

“What apartment?”

“I don’t know exactly.”

Mom looked toward the house.

“I thought they were moving for his job.”

“So did Yvette.”

Dad’s face tightened.

“You’re sure?”

“There were labels.”

Nolan added, “And Grant asked us not to tell her.”

Mom stared at both of us.

The noise from the gift table continued behind her.

A child ripped wrapping paper.

Someone laughed.

The normal sounds made the conversation feel even stranger.

Dad lowered his voice.

“What happened with the promotion?”

“I don’t know.”

“You think he lost it?”

“I think something happened.”

Mom pressed her fingertips to her mouth.

“Oh, Grant.”

Dad’s response was harder.

“What the hell is he doing?”

“Trying to figure out how to tell her.”

“For months?”

“That’s what it looks like.”

Mom looked offended by the idea.

“He wouldn’t lie to her for months.”

Nobody answered.

That was answer enough.

The kitchen door opened.

All three of us turned.

Grant came outside alone.

His face had changed.

Whatever conversation had happened inside, it had not gone the way he expected.

“Where’s Yvette?” Mom asked.

“Bathroom.”

“You told her?”

Grant looked toward me.

“No.”

Dad made a frustrated sound.

“Grant.”

“I tried.”

“You tried?”

Grant’s jaw flexed.

“She thought I wanted to apologize about the argument.”

“And?”

“She got angry.”

Dad stepped closer.

“That’s not a reason to keep lying.”

Grant flinched.

“I know.”

“How many times are you going to say that?”

“Dad.”

“No. You have a wife making plans to move based on something you’ve apparently hidden from her, and you keep saying you know.”

Mom touched Dad’s arm.

“Not here.”

“He picked here.”

Grant stared at the grass.

His daughter shouted his name from the present table.

“Dad! Look!”

He turned immediately.

She held up a glitter-covered backpack.

Grant smiled.

“That’s awesome, kiddo.”

The smile vanished the moment he faced us again.

“I’ll tell her tonight.”

Dad shook his head.

“You should have told her whenever this started.”

Grant’s eyes flashed.

“You think I don’t know that?”

“I don’t know what you know because you won’t tell anybody anything.”

That landed.

Grant’s breathing changed.

His shoulders drew back.

For the first time since this began, anger replaced fear.

“I got passed over.”

Nobody spoke.

Grant looked at the ground.

“There was no promotion.”

The words were simple.

The consequences were not.

Mom whispered, “What?”

“I didn’t get it.”

“When?”

“Months ago.”

My stomach tightened.

“Before Thanksgiving?”

He nodded.

Dad stared at him.

“You’ve been lying since before Thanksgiving?”

Grant rubbed both palms over his face.

“I thought there might be another opening.”

“That’s not the same thing.”

“I know.”

“What about the transfer?”

“There isn’t one.”

“The apartment?”

Grant swallowed.

“My company’s cutting positions.”

A silence opened.

Nolan shifted beside me.

Grant continued.

“They offered me a lower role at the local warehouse or severance.”

Dad’s anger faltered.

“What did you take?”

“Severance.”

Mom sat down.

“Why?”

“Because the warehouse job paid almost half.”

“Half is more than nothing,” Dad said.

“I had another lead.”

“Had?”

Grant nodded.

“That was the call two days ago.”

I understood.

“You didn’t get that one either.”

“No.”

The word barely came out.

He looked toward the kitchen door.

“Yvette thinks I start the new position next month.”

Mom’s face drained of color.

“Oh, Grant.”

“I was going to tell her when I had something else lined up.”

“And then?” I asked.

He looked at me.

“And then I kept thinking I was one interview away.”

The explanation was terrible.

It was also painfully easy to understand.

One more application.

One more phone call.

One more week.

One more chance to replace the truth before anyone had to know it existed.

Dad paced two steps and stopped.

“So why the apartment?”

“Our lease is ending.”

“You can’t renew?”

“Not at the new rate.”

“Yvette doesn’t know that either?”

Grant shook his head.

“She thinks we’re leaving because of the transfer.”

I felt something inside me go cold.

“You let her pack for a move that doesn’t exist.”

His eyes closed.

“Yes.”

“What happens when she finds out where the apartment is?”

“I tell her first.”

“You said that already.”

“I know.”

The kitchen door opened again.

Yvette came outside.

Every face around the table changed.

She noticed immediately.

“What?”

No one answered.

Her gaze moved from Mom to Dad, then to me, Nolan, and finally Grant.

“What happened?”

Grant inhaled.

I watched his chest rise.

For months, everyone had been waiting for him to begin.

He looked at his wife.

“Yvette, I need to tell you something about the promotion.”

The words were out.

Yvette’s expression softened.

“Okay.”

Grant did not continue.

Her smile became uncertain.

“What about it?”

His mouth opened.

Nothing came.

Not because of a stutter.

Not because of speech.

Because the next sentence would destroy the story he had built.

Yvette waited.

Then she glanced toward Nolan.

The irony was so sharp I nearly felt it physically.

A few minutes earlier she had accused my husband of being unable to finish his own sentences.

Now Grant stood directly in front of her, completely fluent and entirely unable to finish his.

“What?” Yvette asked again.

Grant’s daughter called from behind them.

“Mom, can we open the big one?”

Yvette turned automatically.

“Hold on, sweetheart.”

Grant’s courage disappeared with the interruption.

I saw it happen.

His shoulders collapsed slightly.

“We’ll talk later.”

Yvette stared at him.

“No.”

Grant blinked.

“What?”

“You just scared me.”

“I didn’t mean to.”

“Then finish what you started.”

He looked toward their daughter.

Yvette followed his gaze.

Understanding did not arrive, but suspicion did.

Her face changed.

“Is something wrong with the job?”

Grant said nothing.

And for the first time that day, Yvette stopped looking at me as though I were the problem.

She looked at her husband.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: Yvette Thought the Worst
