at her.

For once, he did not answer first.

Neither did anyone else.

Yvette folded her hands on the table.

“Tomorrow, we meet with a financial counselor.”

Grant nodded.

“Together?”

“Yes.”

His shoulders loosened slightly.

She saw.

“Do not mistake that for a promise about us.”

They tightened again.

“I won’t.”

“We make a complete inventory.”

“Yes.”

“We stop using the credit cards.”

“Yes.”

“We cancel anything unnecessary.”

“Yes.”

“We figure out the apartment.”

“Yes.”

“And you find a therapist.”

Grant blinked.

“For me?”

“For you.”

He looked uncertain.

Yvette’s eyes hardened.

“If the only tool you have for shame is secrecy, then debt is not the only problem.”

Grant looked down.

“Okay.”

She added, “I’m finding one too.”

That surprised him.

“Why?”

Yvette looked at Nolan.

Then at me.

Then back at her husband.

“Because I spent months telling myself someone else’s marriage was unhealthy instead of asking why theirs made me uncomfortable.”

Nobody spoke.

She continued.

“And because if I stay, I need to know I’m staying because I choose to, not because I’m afraid of what leaving would mean for Evie.”

Grant’s face tightened.

“If you stay.”

“Yes.”

He absorbed that.

The consequence he had avoided for eighteen months was finally sitting directly in front of him.

Uncertainty.

No hidden spreadsheet could solve it.

No invented promotion could outrun it.

No secret apartment could prearrange it.

Grant looked at Yvette.

“What do you need from me tonight?”

The question was simple.

But it was different from everything he had been asking.

Not Will you leave?

Not Are we okay?

Not What happens next?

What do you need?

Yvette studied him for several seconds.

Then she answered.

“The truth.”

Grant nodded.

“All of it.”

“Yes.”

“Even if it makes things worse.”

Her eyes filled.

“Especially then.”

Grant drew a slow breath.

And for the first time since the birthday party, I believed he understood that telling the truth was not a strategy for controlling the outcome.

It was simply the next thing he owed.

Click
