spreading.”

Yvette rubbed her forehead.

“Fine.”

She refolded the couch.

“What are you doing?”

“We’re adults.”

His chest tightened.

“Yvette.”

“Not what you think.”

“Okay.”

“We can sleep in the same bed.”

Grant said nothing.

She pointed at him.

“Do not interpret it.”

“I am not interpreting.”

“You’re interpreting so hard I can see smoke.”

He laughed nervously.

“I’m trying.”

“Good.”

They slept in Evie’s room after moving their daughter temporarily to the foldout couch, which Evie considered an adventure.

Yvette lay on one edge of the bed.

Grant lay on the other.

There was a gulf between them larger than the mattress.

Neither slept quickly.

After almost an hour, Yvette spoke into the dark.

“Are you awake?”

“Yes.”

“Of course.”

Grant looked toward the ceiling.

“What?”

“I kept waiting for you to ask if this means something.”

“I wanted to.”

“I know.”

“I didn’t.”

“I know.”

Silence returned.

Then Yvette said, “It does mean something.”

His heart started pounding.

She continued before he could respond.

“It means I can be in the same room with you.”

Grant let out a slow breath.

“Okay.”

“It means I missed sleeping next to you.”

He stared into the darkness.

“Okay.”

“It means I am not ready to move back.”

His chest tightened.

“Okay.”

She turned her head toward him.

“You can say more than okay.”

He laughed quietly.

“I’m terrified of saying the wrong thing.”

“That is also a form of hiding.”

He absorbed that.

Then said, “I’m glad you’re here.”

Yvette waited.

“I want you to stay.”

Her breathing changed slightly.

“But I’m trying not to turn tonight into a contract.”

A long pause.

“That was the right thing.”

Grant smiled in the dark.

“Can I enjoy that?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

Another silence.

Then Yvette moved her hand into the space between them.

Not all the way.

Halfway.

Grant stared.

He understood the invitation.

He also understood the limit.

He reached across and touched her fingers.

Nothing else.

They stayed like that.

No promises.

No verdict.

Just contact.

In the morning, Yvette packed her overnight bag.

Grant did not ask when she would return.

At the door, she looked at him.

“You didn’t ask.”

“I know.”

She smiled faintly.

“Tonight.”

His face changed before he could stop it.

“I’m coming back tonight.”

Grant nodded.

“Okay.”

Yvette laughed.

“Now you can interpret a little.”

She kissed his cheek.

Then left.

Grant stood in the doorway long after she reached the parking lot.

For the first time since the truth came out, hope did not feel like something he needed to turn into certainty.

It was simply something he could carry carefully.

<a
