close to our faces.

She showed me the memory card.

Then my locket.

I remembered opening it.

I had removed a tiny photograph of my grandmother.

Slid the memory card inside.

Closed it.

Sofia whispered:

“If something happens to me, find Eva.”

The memory hit with physical force.

I had promised.

“I will.”

My own voice.

Young.

Terrified.

Certain.

The video ended.

I was crying.

Not dramatically.

Tears simply ran down my face.

“I promised her.”

Morales said nothing.

“I forgot.”

“You survived a traumatic brain truth remained complicated.

Richard had helped them.

Richard had harmed me.

Both existed.

The next file was audio.

My voice again.

This time recorded later.

Inside my car.

“I’m heading to the station.”

My nineteen-year-old voice sounded breathless.

“I have evidence. Dad told me not to go to local police, but I’m going to state patrol.”

Then another sound.

An engine.

Headlights appeared behind me.

I said, “Someone’s following.”

The recording became chaotic.

I remembered now.

The memory card was already hidden in my locket.

My father had taken the paper files.

He told me to drive away separately.

Then the brakes failed.

I screamed.

The audio ended with impact.

The room went silent.

I stared at the screen.

“That was me.”

“Yes.”

“They knew I was going to police.”

“Apparently.”

“Who told Victor?”

Morales opened another file.

A call log.

One number from a payphone near the warehouse.

A second number belonging to Hale Security.

The caller was unidentified.

“But someone warned him.”

“Yes.”

I looked at the timeline.

Then saw something.

The call occurred before I left the warehouse.

“Someone inside.”

“Yes.”

“Cal?”

“Maybe.”

“Richard?”

“Possible.”

The word hurt more than I expected.

“Play the next file.”

Morales hesitated.

Then did.

Security camera footage.

Hospital corridor.

Hours after the crash.

Richard entered.

Margaret followed.

A man in medical scrubs met them.

The technician.

They spoke.

No audio.

Then Richard saw my locket in a property bag.

He picked it up.

Opened it.

Saw the memory card.

I watched his face.

Shock.

Fear.

He looked toward Margaret.

Then closed the locket and put it in his pocket.

The technician returned.

Richard said something.

The man shook his head.

Richard grabbed his arm.

For several seconds they argued.

Then the technician entered my room.

The tracker was implanted shortly afterward.

My stomach twisted.

“Did Richard try to stop it?”

Morales rewound.

We watched again.

Maybe.

Maybe not.

His gestures were agitated.

But without audio, intention was impossible to prove.

“He still kept the card.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“That answer may be in the next file.”

Audio.

Margaret’s voice.

Richard’s.

Recorded secretly by someone.

Probably Sofia.

Richard sounded panicked.

“I’m not giving it to Victor.”

Margaret said, “Then destroy it.”

“No.”

“Richard, if he finds out—”

“He put that thing in her.”

“So?”

“So she nearly died.”

“You were following her.”

“I didn’t cut her brakes.”

“You helped.”

Silence.

Then Richard said, “I’m keeping the card.”

“For what?”

“Insurance.”

My stomach sank.

Not justice.

Insurance.

Even then.

Margaret asked, “And the girl?”

Richard said, “She won’t remember me.”

“How do you know?”

“The doctor says memory around the crash may not come back.”

“And if it does?”

Long silence.

Then Richard answered.

“I’ll deal with it.”

I stopped the recording.

Morales looked at me.

“I’ve heard enough.”

“There’s more.”

“I know.”

“Do you want to stop?”

“No.”

I breathed slowly.

“I just needed to hear that clearly.”

Richard had not decided to protect me.

He had decided to manage me.

Years later, he had transformed management into marriage.

The distinction mattered.

The next file was dated thirteen years ago.

Richard and Victor.

Audio only.

Victor:

“Carter is still looking.”

Richard:

“He has nothing.”

Victor:

“He has his daughter.”

Richard:

“She remembers nothing.”

Victor:

“Then make sure it stays that way.”

My skin went cold.

Richard replied:

“I’m not hurting her.”

Victor laughed.

“You already did.”

The recording ended.

I stared at Morales.

“Was that before Richard met me again?”

“Yes.”

So Margaret had been telling the truth.

Victor had sent Richard back.

The next recording came months later.

Richard:

“She trusts me.”

Victor:

“Good.”

Richard:

“I’m done reporting on her.”

Victor:

“You’re done when I say.”

Richard:

“No.”

Victor:

“You think sleeping with a woman makes you brave?”

Richard:

“I’m marrying her.”

Victor laughed for nearly ten seconds.

Then:

“That might be the smartest thing you’ve ever done.”

I closed the laptop.

Morales let me.

“That was enough.”

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then I asked, “Is there anything proving who killed my father?”

“Yes.”

My hands went still.

“Show me.”

Morales opened a final audio file.

Cal Mercer’s voice.

Victor’s.

Recorded less than a year ago.

Victor:

“Robert found the box location.”

Cal:

“What do you want?”

Victor:

“No noise.”

Cal:

“Heart?”

Victor:

“Clean.”

My vision blurred.

Then Cal asked:

“And the daughter?”

Victor answered:

“Richard keeps her controlled.”

Something inside me broke and hardened at the same time.

My father had been killed.

Not suspected.

Not possibly.

Killed.

And Victor had counted on Richard’s abuse as part of the containment.

I whispered, “Richard knew.”

Morales answered carefully.

“He knew Victor said the problem was handled afterward.”

“He knew what that meant.”

“Likely.”

“No.”

I looked at her.

“He knew.”

Morales did not argue.

“What happens now?”

“We arrest Victor.”

“You have enough.”

“Yes.”

“And Cal.”

“Yes.”

“Evan.”

“Yes.”

“Richard?”

She held my gaze.

“Yes.”

The answer hurt.

But it was right.

“What charges?”

“That will depend on prosecutors and evidence, but assault, evidence tampering, conspiracy-related offenses, obstruction, possibly more.”

I nodded.

No special treatment because he helped Sofia.

No erasure because he saved the card.

No absolution because Victor was worse.

Richard had made choices.

Repeatedly.

The laptop chimed.

An incoming secure message.

Morales opened it.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

“Richard is awake.”

I said nothing.

“He wants to speak with you.”

My first instinct was no.

My second was also no.

Then I remembered the one thing still unresolved.

The tracker.

Why place it if they already knew where I was?

And why had Richard stayed so close for thirteen years if the card was already in his possession?

There was still something he had never explained.

“I’ll talk to him.”

Morales nodded.

“Tomorrow.”

“No.”

I looked at the laptop.

“Now.”

Because for the first time since the crash, I remembered enough to know exactly when Richard lied.

And I wanted to hear whether he would finally tell me why.
