Jessica, the kiss, the six-month affair and Daniel’s insistence that our marriage had somehow been over without anyone bothering to inform me.

Only once did she move sharply.

That was when I repeated Jessica’s admission that they had been waiting until after the transplant.

Mom’s fingers tightened around the purse strap.

When I Noah had done that at age four when he discovered a screwdriver and ambition on the same afternoon.

I ran my fingertips over the mark.

Inside were fifteen years of paper evidence from a life I had believed existed.

Daniel’s wedding letter.

Anniversary cards.

Photographs.

Hospital bracelets from the children’s births.

Father’s Day drawings.

Concert tickets.

A paper napkin from the restaurant where he proposed.

I had saved almost everything.

Mom stood near the window while I sorted through it.

My hands shook less with every item.

There was our tenth-anniversary card.

An old note Daniel had once hidden inside my work bag.

A photograph of us dancing badly at a cousin’s wedding.

None of those mattered.

They belonged to years before Jessica.

I kept searching.

Then I found the card from our fifteenth anniversary.

Two months earlier.

I opened it.

Daniel’s handwriting crossed the blank side in blue ink.

I remembered reading it at breakfast while Emma complained that public displays of marital affection were ruining her appetite.

The words no longer felt romantic.

They felt forensic.

Daniel had written that fifteen years with me still did not feel like enough.

Jessica said the affair had lasted six months.

I placed the card aside.

Mom said nothing.

Next came the Valentine’s Day card.

Daniel had called me his favorite person.

His home.

At the time, Jessica had already existed.

I added it to the first card.

My heartbeat had become steady.

Not calmer.

Steadier.

There was a difference.

I found a folded note from our family vacation six months earlier, tucked inside the envelope with airline receipts.

Daniel had placed it in my suitcase before we left.

Fifteen years in and I’d still choose you.

The trip had happened almost exactly when his affair with Jessica began.

I read the sentence twice.

“Mom.”

She came closer.

I handed her the three notes.

She read them silently.

Her mouth hardened.

“He told that woman your marriage had been over for years?”

“Yes.”

“And he wrote these while seeing her?”

“Yes.”

“What are you thinking?”

I closed the box.

“That Jessica deserves to know who she’s planning a future with.”

Mom pulled the chair closer.

“Be careful.”

“I’m not going after her.”

“She slept with your husband.”

“She also thinks I agreed to it.”

“You believe that?”

“I believe Daniel lies.”

That was the first conclusion of the previous twenty-four hours that felt solid.

If he could look at me throughout donor testing, anniversaries, Valentine’s Day and family dinners while maintaining another relationship, I no longer trusted his version of anything.

Maybe Jessica had knowingly helped him use me.

Maybe she had not.

Either way, I could answer one question without speculation.

Daniel had told us different stories.

I asked the nurse for hospital stationery.

She brought a small pad and a pen.

Mom watched while I wrote.

I did not write much.

I did not insult Jessica.

I did not beg Daniel.

I did not threaten anybody.

I wrote that Jessica deserved to see what Daniel had been telling the wife he claimed was already emotionally separated from him.

Then I placed the anniversary card, Valentine’s message and vacation note on top of the box.

“What are you doing?” Mom asked.

“Sending it to his room.”

“Why not carry it down there?”

“Because I don’t want another conversation with him.”

“And if Jessica isn’t there?”

“She’ll see it eventually if he’s as committed to honesty as he suddenly claims.”

Mom almost smiled.

I called a local courier service rather than asking hospital staff to become involved in our marriage.

It felt ridiculous arranging a delivery from one hospital room to another floor.

That was fine.

My entire life had become ridiculous.

The courier arrived shortly after visiting hours began.

He was a young man with a rain-spotted jacket and the wary expression of someone who suspected the package contained a family problem he did not want explained.

“Room number’s on there?” he asked.

“Yes.”

“Signature?”

“No.”

“Anything fragile?”

I looked at the cedar box.

“Not anymore.”

Mom waited until he left before speaking.

“What do you expect to happen?”

“I don’t know.”

That was true.

I had stopped trying to predict Daniel.

The box was not revenge.

It was not a trap.

It contained nothing fabricated, altered or stolen.

I was simply placing Daniel’s own words beside Daniel’s other story.

Whatever happened when those versions met belonged to him.

Ten minutes passed.

Then fifteen.

A nurse checked my blood pressure.

Mom pretended to read something on her phone.

I stared toward the doorway.

Nothing happened.

I began to wonder whether Jessica had already left.

Then a man’s voice echoed from down the corridor.

Daniel.

“Jessica, wait.”

Mom slowly lowered her phone.

We looked at each other.

A woman answered, too far away for me to hear the words.

Daniel’s voice rose.

“I can explain.”

Something struck a wall or a table.

Then Jessica shouted clearly enough for half the floor to hear.

“You said this marriage was over years ago!”

My mother’s eyebrows lifted.

I lay back against the pillow.

For the first time since I had walked into Daniel’s room, I felt no confusion at all.

His two versions of reality had finally met.

Footsteps approached rapidly.

A shadow crossed my doorway.

Jessica appeared holding the anniversary card in one hand.

Her face had lost every trace of the confidence she had shown beside Daniel’s bed.

She looked at me.

“Can I talk to you?”

<a
