Jessica?”

“No.”

“What did Michael say?”

“That if there was anything I hadn’t told you, I should do it before surgery.”

Again.

Another warning.

Another opportunity.

Another choice.

“Did you ever seriously believe you could keep all of this hidden forever?”

Daniel was quiet.

“No.”

“Then what was the plan?”

“To get through surgery.”

“And then?”

“Tell you.”

“Then leave.”

“Yes.”

“Then introduce Lucas.”

“Eventually.”

“So everything difficult was scheduled for after you got what you needed.”

His breathing changed.

“I know how that looks.”

“Stop saying looks.”

I nearly shouted.

“This is not an optical illusion.”

He went silent.

I lowered my voice.

“You wrote me out of your future before I went into surgery.”

“That’s not completely true.”

“What part isn’t?”

“I didn’t know what I would do after.”

“You signed a will.”

“I was afraid.”

“You rented storage.”

“I was afraid.”

“You opened accounts.”

“I was afraid.”

“You slept with Jessica.”

He had no answer for that.

I continued.

“You keep using fear as though it removes choice.”

“It doesn’t.”

“Good.”

“I know that now.”

“No. You knew it then too.”

Silence.

I was tired.

Physically.

Emotionally.

Deep in the bones.

“I’m filing.”

The words surprised me as they left my mouth.

Daniel said nothing.

Maybe he had stopped breathing.

“For divorce?” he finally asked.

“Yes.”

“Claire.”

“No.”

“Can we wait until we’re recovered?”

“You waited until you recovered enough to leave me.”

“That isn’t fair.”

I almost laughed.

“Fair stopped being useful a long time ago.”

He began crying.

I felt the old reflex.

Comfort him.

Ask whether he was okay.

Offer a path back.

I let the reflex pass without obeying it.

“You planned this ending before I knew the story had changed.”

“I know.”

“I am not filing because Jessica exists.”

He was quiet.

“I am filing because I cannot make another major decision with you while wondering which reality you’re letting me see.”

Daniel whispered, “I understand.”

The words sounded devastated.

They were also the first thing he had said that evening I believed without reservation.

After we ended the call, I phoned Evelyn.

“File.”

She asked only one question.

“You’re sure this is your decision, not a reaction to what you found today?”

I looked at the dark window over the sink.

At my reflection.

At the scar hidden beneath my shirt.

At the house Daniel had already begun leaving months before I knew.

“Yes.”

Evelyn nodded.

“All right.”

The papers were prepared the next morning.

Before I signed, I read every page.

Slowly.

No assumptions.

No trusting that someone else understood what I meant.

No blank spaces left for another person to fill.

When I finished, I signed my name.

For the first time in months, a consequential decision about my marriage happened with all the information in front of me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16:
