ended another phone call.

“The judge signed the temporary restraining order.”

Susan laughed once.

The sound was almost hysterical.

“So we stopped it twice.”

Sanders nodded.

“For tonight.”

I stared at Mom’s letter.

She had built redundancy into everything.

The house.

The executor.

The reserve.

The phrase.

She had expected Dad to search for documents and leverage.

What else had she expected?

My phone rang.

Lily.

I answered.

“Hey.”

She was whispering.

“I’m in the restroom.”

“What happened?”

“Dad and Mom are leaving.”

“Together?”

“Yes.”

“From the banquet?”

“They told everyone Dad has a migraine.”

I looked at Susan.

“They’re leaving the hotel.”

Sanders checked his watch.

“Where would they go?”

Lily answered without hearing him.

“Home, I think.”

Then her voice lowered.

“Diane, there’s something else.”

“What?”

“I heard Dad tell Mom that the bank problem doesn’t matter.”

My skin prickled.

“Why?”

“He said, ‘We still have Eleanor’s original.’”

The room went completely silent.

I looked at Sanders.

He looked at Susan.

I whispered, “Original what?”

Lily said, “I don’t know.”

Then I heard a door open on her end.

She stopped speaking.

A man’s voice.

Dad.

“Lily?”

The call ended.

I stared at the screen.

Susan was already grabbing her keys.

Sanders said, “Wait.”

“No.”

“Arthur may be going home.”

“My daughter is there.”

“Your niece.”

Susan looked at him.

“Tonight that distinction seems pretty useless.”

I picked up Mom’s letter.

“Lily’s right.”

They both looked at me.

“About what?”

“The bank wasn’t the only plan.”

I thought of the missing operating ledger.

The empty hiding place.

Dad’s warning.

You think stopping one signature changes anything?

And now:

We still have Eleanor’s original.

I turned toward Mr. Sanders.

“What original document could override everything my mother protected?”

His face changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

He sat down slowly.

“No.”

“What?”

He looked at the open cabinet upstairs.

Then at Mom’s letter.

“There was an earlier will.”

Susan froze.

“What earlier will?”

“Before Eleanor revised the estate plan.”

My pulse accelerated.

“What did it say?”

Sanders looked directly at me.

“That Arthur inherited Magnolia.”

Silence.

I understood immediately.

“If he has the original—”

“He may try to claim the later estate documents were invalid.”

“Could that work?”

“It should not.”

“That is not what I asked.”

Sanders looked toward the door.

“If he has been preparing this for ten years, Diane, I no longer know what evidence he has manufactured.”

My phone buzzed.

A text from Lily.

Only four words.

Dad knows I helped you.

Then another.

Please come get me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: My Stepsister Asked Me to Come Back for Her, but My Father Had Already Turned
