toward the stairs.

“Should I go down?”

“No.”

Susan leaned against the doorframe.

“Let her have her own fight.”

She was right.

I stayed.

Ten minutes later Lily appeared.

Her eyes were swollen.

“She admitted it.”

“What?”

“Emily.”

I waited.

“She said Dad convinced her it was temporary.”

I said nothing.

“She said the house was supposed to go back to you later.”

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“I know.”

“She believes it?”

Lily laughed bitterly.

“I don’t know what she believes.”

I sat beside her on the floor.

She leaned against the wall.

After a while she asked, “Did Dad really try to burn this place?”

“I don’t know.”

“He brought gasoline.”

“Yes.”

“But left it in the car.”

“Yes.”

“He had a lighter.”

“Yes.”

She nodded.

“We’ll never know.”

“Probably not.”

That uncertainty bothered me.

Then I realized something.

For years Dad had depended on uncertainty to control people.

Maybe I did not need to solve every ambiguity.

The important facts were enough.

He forged.

He lied.

He planned.

He pressured.

He came back for evidence.

Whether he truly intended to burn the house did not change those facts.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Detective Ortiz.

Victor’s laptop had been recovered from Dad’s car.

Not destroyed.

Evidence intact.

Then another message.

She had found something else on Dad’s phone.

A scheduled email.

Set to send at midnight if not canceled.

Recipient:

Me.

Subject:

THE TRUTH ABOUT YOUR MOTHER.

My stomach tightened.

Ortiz asked whether I wanted the scheduled email preserved without opening it until counsel reviewed it.

I looked at Lily.

At Susan.

At Mom’s room.

Dad had spent two days using secrets as weapons.

One more secret waited in an outbox.

This time, he had arranged to speak even if he could not.

I typed back.

Preserve it.

Do not delete anything.

Then I showed Sanders.

He read the subject.

His face changed.

“You think it’s another threat?”

“I don’t know.”

He nodded.

“That may be worse.”

Midnight was six hours away.

Dad was in custody.

Magnolia was safe.

The reserve was frozen.

The company sale was dead.

The corrected estate documents were secure.

For the first time, there was no immediate emergency.

And yet I could not stop looking at the subject line.

THE TRUTH ABOUT YOUR MOTHER.

Because even after losing every other piece of leverage, my father had found one final thing he believed could still move me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: The Email My Father Scheduled Before His Arrest Revealed the Last Secret My
