testify?”

“Yes.”

“Richard?”

“Yes.”

“Emily?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

I looked toward the kitchen.

“Am I required?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Patricia hesitated.

“Mr. Hale, I should warn you that Richard is circulating a narrative.”

“What narrative?”

“That you are retaliating over a family dispute.”

“Thanksgiving.”

“Yes.”

I dinner.”

She was quiet.

Then said, “That is precisely what the board’s counsel noted.”

By evening, reporters had learned something was happening at Merritt Development.

Nothing detailed.

A postponed acquisition.

A temporary restriction on executive authority.

Rumors of a governance review.

Richard’s carefully built image had begun to crack publicly.

I watched no television.

Instead, I cooked.

Ruth’s casserole dish was still at the Merritts’ house.

The absence irritated me more than it should have.

At eight twenty, someone knocked.

Emily stood outside holding it.

The blue ceramic dish.

Clean.

Wrapped in one of Ruth’s old kitchen towels.

She looked terrible.

“I thought this belonged here.”

I opened the almost smiled.

Emily noticed.

For the first time since Thanksgiving, something human passed between us.

Then she said, “My father knows I gave them the recording.”

The small moment disappeared.

“What happened?”

“He said I was dead to him.”

I looked at her.

“And what did you say?”

She swallowed.

“I told him that was the first honest thing he’d said to me in years.”

I stepped aside.

“Come in.”

She entered carrying more than the empty dish.

I could see it in her face.

“I have another recording,” she said.

I stopped.

“Of what?”

She looked toward the living room.

“Daniel.”

My stomach tightened.

“What about him?”

Emily’s eyes filled.

“It was made the night he signed the proxy.”

I did not move.

“What does he say?”

Her answer came quietly.

“He says if you won’t transfer the shares willingly, he thinks there may be another way to make you do it.”

The room went cold.

I stared at her.

“What way?”

Emily shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

“Play it.”

She reached into her bag.

For the first time since Daniel had read Ruth’s letter, I wondered whether my wife’s warning had come too late.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: Emily’s Recording Sounded Like the Betrayal I Feared Most,
