sure?”

“Yes.”

“What does it do?”

“When exercised, it increases your position considerably.”

“How considerably?”

He told me.

I sat down again.

The percentage did not make me owner of Merritt.

But it made me impossible to ignore.

“So Richard really had no idea.”

“Not until recently.”

“What happens if I exercise it?”

“You gain additional shares according to the original terms.”

“Do I have to?”

“No.”

“Can someone else?”

“Not without your authorization as executor and beneficiary.”

I looked at Ruth’s photograph.

She had left me leverage.

Not instructions.

That was important.

“What would you do?” I asked.

Harold chuckled.

“That is an expensive question.”

“I’m already paying you.”

“Then I would wait.”

“Why?”

“Because power is most useful before people know what you intend to do with it.”

Ruth would have liked that answer.

The next morning, the Merritt board announced Richard’s permanent resignation.

No dramatic language.

No public accusations.

Only a statement about governance review, leadership transition and continuing cooperation with outside counsel.

Richard’s name disappeared from the company website by noon.

At two, Emily came to the house.

Daniel arrived separately ten minutes later.

Neither had expected the other.

I had asked both.

We sat at the kitchen table.

Ruth’s blue casserole dish rested on the counter.

I told them about the warrant.

Daniel stared.

“Mom owned more shares?”

“She had the right to acquire them.”

“Why didn’t she?”

“I don’t know.”

Emily looked uneasy.

“What are you going to do?”

“I haven’t decided.”

“Could you take control of Merritt?”

“No.”

“Could you control my father’s position?”

“Not alone.”

Daniel looked at me.

“Could you hurt him?”

The question irritated me.

“If that were my goal, there are easier ways.”

“Then what is your goal?”

I thought about Thanksgiving.

About the porch.

The rain.

The casserole.

Richard’s records.

Emily’s company.

Daniel’s signature.

Ruth’s letters.

“My goal is to stop letting other people decide what my family is supposed to be.”

Neither spoke.

I looked at Daniel.

“You don’t earn your way back by pleasing me.”

Then Emily.

“You don’t save your marriage by blaming your father.”

She looked down.

Then both.

“And neither of you gets to use money as proof that you’re okay.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

Emily began crying.

Not because I had forgiven her.

I had not said that.

Perhaps because nobody at the table was negotiating.

For once, no transaction sat underneath the conversation.

Daniel looked at her.

“I’m sorry.”

She wiped her face.

“For what?”

“For becoming more loyal to your father’s opinion than to you.”

Emily gave a bitter laugh.

“I did the same thing.”

Their marriage would survive or it wouldn’t.

I refused to decide for them.

That was another form of control.

Before they left, Daniel stopped beside Ruth’s casserole dish.

“Can I make it next Thanksgiving?”

I looked at him.

“You know how?”

“Mom taught me.”

“I remember.”

He smiled faintly.

“I forgot for a while.”

“Yes.”

He touched the chipped handle.

“So did you.”

The sentence surprised me.

“What did I forget?”

“That you could tell me no.”

I stared at him.

He was right.

For years, I had called constant rescue love.

Perhaps sometimes it was fear.

Fear that if Daniel failed, Ruth and I had failed.

Fear that holding him accountable would push him toward people like Richard.

By avoiding that risk, I may have helped create another.

“I suppose we’re all learning.”

Daniel nodded.

After they left, I sat alone.

The house felt different.

Not happier.

Clearer.

My phone rang.

Patricia.

“We have a development.”

The phrase had become unwelcome.

“What now?”

“Richard’s resignation is complete, but there is a dispute over his remaining voting rights.”

“Why involve me?”

“Because the board may ask you to exercise Ruth’s warrant.”

I stood.

“For what purpose?”

“To stabilize control during the investigation.”

There it was.

Exactly what Ruth had protected against.

A powerful group asking me to use my shares to solve their problem.

I nearly laughed.

“What happens if I say no?”

“There may be a prolonged control fight.”

“And if I say yes?”

“You become one of the most influential shareholders in Merritt.”

I looked toward Ruth’s photograph.

Power had arrived at my door wearing a different suit.

Richard had wanted it.

Daniel had chased it.

Emily had been used by it.

Now it was being offered to me.

Patricia asked, “Mr. Hale?”

“I’m here.”

“The board needs an answer soon.”

I walked into Ruth’s study and opened the drawer where her letters had been.

Empty now.

One belonged to Daniel.

The other lay on my desk.

I read the final sentence again.

Money should never be allowed to decide what family means.

I finally understood that the sentence had another half, one Ruth had never needed to write.

Power shouldn’t decide either.

“I’ll give you my answer tomorrow,” I said.

After ending the call, I looked at the warrant.

For the first time, I wondered whether Ruth had never exercised it because she knew the greatest protection was not owning more power.

It was knowing when not to use it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The Board Wanted Ruth’s Shares to Save Merritt, but Their Urgency
