The buyer’s disclosed name on the draft was Meridian Strategic Partners.”

I remembered the line.

I had skimmed past it because the forged signature had mattered more.

“Victor hid behind Meridian.”

“That appears to be the case.”

“Why?”

Nina glanced toward the conference room.

“That smile.

Then he looked at me.

“No, apparently not.”

There it was.

The resentment.

Not toward Daniel.

Toward me.

“When did yourself.”

“I’m not.”

“You were supposed to be temporary.”

The words were so unexpected that even Daniel looked confused.

“What does that mean?” I asked.

Victor crossed his arms.

“When Daniel was struggling, you provided money.”

“I invested.”

“You bailed out your husband.”

“I became controlling shareholder.”

“You took advantage of a crisis.”

My anger sharpened.

“Daniel offered the structure.”

“That was before he understood what it meant.”

Daniel turned toward him.

“I knew what it meant.”

Victor looked at his son.

“You knew you needed her check.”

The cruelty of it landed cleanly.

Daniel sat down.

For once, I did not feel satisfaction seeing him diminished.

I understood something instead.

Victor had been doing this to him his entire life.

Reducing every accomplishment until Daniel needed another.

It did not excuse what Daniel had done.

But it explained why his father’s approval had become a currency more powerful than reason.

“Why conceal the buyer?” Nina asked.

Victor ignored her.

I answered for him.

“Because I would never have approved a sale to him.”

Victor’s eyes returned to me.

“No.”

“And you needed my signature.”

“Yes.”

The room changed.

It was the first clean admission.

Daniel looked toward him.

“You knew the signature wasn’t hers?”

Victor’s jaw tightened.

I turned to Daniel.

“You didn’t?”

He looked at me.

For once, I could not read him.

“I thought you had signed the preliminary consent.”

“When?”

“Three months ago.”

“Where?”

“Dad brought it to me.”

Victor said, “Daniel.”

Daniel ignored him.

“He said you had agreed to believe Daniel completely.

Not yet.

He had still planned a divorce.

Still moved money.

Still lied.

But perhaps the forged approval had begun somewhere else.

Nina opened another document.

“Mr. Prescott, did you provide Daniel with this consent?”

Victor sat again.

“I am not answering further humor.

“This isn’t a courtroom.”

“No,” I said.

“It’s the company you tried to buy using my stolen signature.”

Patricia this?”

Everyone went silent.

Victor’s expression shifted.

Patricia understood immediately.

“Oh my God.”

The property Nina had traced to slowly.

“No.”

Her gaze returned to Victor.

“You told me Daniel bought it.”

Victor rubbed his temple.

“It was family
