asked.

Daniel shook his head.

“I thought he was helping me.”

“People keep helping you into situations that benefit them.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

He did not answer.

Nina’s phone chimed.

She glanced at it.

“Interesting.”

“What?”

“Andrew’s finder’s fee wasn’t one hundred twenty thousand.”

Daniel frowned.

“He said it was.”

“He received that amount directly.”

“And?”

“Another payment went to a company registered to his wife.”

“How much?”

“Eight hundred thousand dollars.”

Daniel stood so quickly his chair struck the wall.

“Eight hundred?”

“Yes.”

“For what?”

“Consulting.”

“He never told me.”

I looked at Daniel.

“He was going to receive nearly a million dollars if this transaction moved forward.”

Daniel paced once across the room.

“He told me he was doing this because we were friends.”

I did not have to say anything.

He heard himself.

After all, that had been his logic with me too.

Trust meant not reading.

Friendship meant not questioning.

Family meant not verifying.

Every person around Daniel had learned exactly how to exploit that weakness.

Except me.

I had spent nine years trying to correct it.

And he had resented me for doing so.

Nina closed the file.

“We need Andrew’s communications.”

“They’re under preservation.”

“I want full production.”

She nodded.

Daniel stopped pacing.

“I’ll call him.”

“No,” Nina and I said together.

He looked at us.

Nina added, “You have already interfered enough by talking when you should preserve evidence.”

He sat.

For once, he did not argue.

Near midnight, I drove back to the lake house.

I had barely entered when Nina called.

Andrew’s attorney had contacted her.

“He wants to cooperate.”

“Why?”

“He’s scared.”

“Of what?”

“Victor.”

I put down my keys.

“What does he claim?”

“That the transaction was never meant to close at forty-two million.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“He says the stated purchase price was false.”

“For financing?”

“Possibly.”

“What was the real number?”

“Twenty-eight million.”

The difference was enormous.

“Where was the other fourteen going?”

“That,” Nina said, “is what Andrew wants immunity from civil action to explain.”

I looked out toward the black lake.

Fourteen million dollars.

Not missing yet.

Planned.

Hidden inside a sale Daniel believed would make him wealthy.

“Don’t promise him anything.”

“I won’t.”

“Get the explanation first.”

“He insists on a meeting tomorrow.”

“Fine.”

I thought of Andrew laughing at Bellmont House.

The friend.

The adviser.

The man paid nearly a million dollars to help turn my marriage into leverage.

“Tell him I’ll be there.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 7:
