date.”

“When?”

“Seven years ago.”

The year Victor first began complaining about my control.

“And initials.”

“What initials?”

Daniel read them.

“L.M.”

No one in the room reacted.

The initials meant nothing to me.

Evelyn, however, had gone pale.

I looked at her.

“You know who that is.”

She did not answer.

“Evelyn.”

She sat slowly.

“I hoped she wasn’t involved.”

“Who?”

“Laura Mercer.”

The name meant nothing.

“Who is Laura Mercer?”

Evelyn looked at me with something close to pity.

“She worked for your father.”

My chest tightened.

“In what capacity?”

“Private financial adviser.”

“My father’s adviser was Harold Stein.”

“Publicly.”

“What does that mean?”

“Laura managed several private investments he never placed under Stein’s firm.”

I stared.

“Why would she meet Victor?”

“That,” Evelyn said, “is the question your father spent his final year trying to answer.”

The room disappeared around me.

“My father knew Victor was doing this?”

“Not all of it.”

“How much?”

“He knew someone was trying to obtain information about your inheritance and Prescott Logistics.”

“And he never told me.”

“He was dying.”

“That didn’t stop him from hiding amendments in books.”

Evelyn flinched.

Good.

I was tired of dead men and living lawyers making decisions for me.

“Where is Laura now?”

“I don’t know.”

“Find her.”

Nina was already typing.

Within fifteen minutes, she located a professional registration.

Laura Mercer had left financial advising five years earlier.

Her current occupation was listed through a private investment firm.

The firm’s name made Evelyn close her eyes.

“What?”

She turned the laptop toward me.

Mercer-Dalton Capital Partners.

Dalton.

Richard.

I stared at the page.

Laura Mercer and Richard Dalton were not merely connected.

They were business partners.

The company had been formed three years ago.

One year after Richard left Prescott Logistics.

“What do they invest in?” I asked.

Nina opened the portfolio.

Transportation.

Warehousing.

Distressed logistics businesses.

Competitors.

Then I saw a familiar name.

One of their portfolio companies had recently begun bidding against Prescott Logistics for three major regional contracts.

“They’re competing with us.”

“Yes.”

“So Richard was protecting us while building a competitor?”

Evelyn looked shaken.

“I didn’t know.”

I turned toward her.

“That sentence is getting crowded.”

My phone buzzed.

Daniel.

A photograph.

The image from his drawer.

Victor stood on the left.

Richard on the right.

Between them was Laura Mercer.

Behind them was a sign identifying a private bank.

The date was seven years earlier.

I enlarged the image.

Something was written along the bottom edge.

A number.

An account reference.

Nina saw it too.

She copied it.

Ten minutes later, she found a match in the documents we already possessed.

The number belonged to an account that had received one of the earliest unexplained transfers from Prescott Logistics.

The account had existed for seven years.

Long before the recent sale.

Long before Daniel’s divorce plan.

Long before Meridian.

I stared at the photograph.

Victor had been planning something for nearly the entire life of our marriage.

And Richard, the man we had just begun recasting as a reluctant whistleblower, had apparently been standing beside him at the beginning.

Click
