has nothing left that matters to him except Prescott.

There.

The company was not merely Ryan’s desired inheritance.

It was the weapon.

He wanted Victor to lose what Victor valued.

The problem was that eighty-three employees lived inside that symbol.

Claire: You don’t punish Victor by destroying people who never knew Michael.

A longer pause.

Ryan: You really think this is about punishment.

Claire: Isn’t it?

Ryan: No.

Then another message.

It’s about taking away the one thing he spent his life believing only a Prescott son could inherit.

I stared.

Ryan did not want to destroy Prescott Logistics.

He wanted to own it.

Not as Evan Cole.

Not as a hidden child.

As Victor Prescott’s surviving son.

Recognition through acquisition.

Daniel read the message.

His face changed.

“He wants my place.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

“What?”

“He wants what he thinks your place represents.”

“That’s the same thing.”

“It isn’t.”

Daniel had spent his entire life making the same mistake.

Confusing titles with worth.

Ownership with identity.

Victor had raised two sons around the same hunger.

One publicly.

One secretly.

Both now believed a company could settle the question of who mattered more.

I typed:

Claire: Prescott Logistics is not your father’s to give you.

Ryan: We’ll see.

Then his phone went dark.

At 9:07, authorities traced a vehicle connected to Laura near an abandoned Prescott construction property outside the city.

The property had belonged to Victor’s old company.

A maintenance depot.

Vacant for years.

Daniel stood.

“That’s where Dad took Ryan when we were kids.”

Patricia looked at him.

“The lake photo?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

Daniel stared at the address.

“The warehouse where I saw Ryan arguing with him before the crash.”

Everything had circled back to the beginning.

Victor might be there.

Ryan.

Laura.

And perhaps the final version of a plan eight years in the making.

Daniel reached for his coat.

I stepped in front of him.

“No.”

His jaw tightened.

“I know what you’re going to say.”

“Then surprise me.”

He looked toward the address.

For several seconds, I watched every old instinct fight across his face.

Rush in.

Prove himself.

Fix it.

Be the son who acts.

Then Daniel slowly put the coat down.

“What do we do?”

It was the first time he had asked that question and meant we as a group of people with expertise rather than himself and whichever impulse came next.

Nina answered.

“We let professionals handle the location.”

Daniel nodded.

It should not have been remarkable.

It was.

We waited.

Twenty-three minutes later, investigators confirmed movement inside the depot.

Three heat signatures.

One stationary.

Two moving.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“Dad.”

Maybe.

Ryan.

Laura.

Maybe.

No one guessed aloud.

Then my phone vibrated again.

A photograph from Ryan.

Victor seated beneath a work light.

Beside him, a stack of legal papers.

On top was a document I recognized immediately.

Transfer of voting interest.

My name appeared below.

A blank signature line waited.

Ryan’s message followed.

Bring the original amendment.

Daniel looked at me.

“What does he want with it?”

I already knew.

“He wants to see whether he can destroy the one document that keeps him from taking control.”

Nina shook her head.

“Then he doesn’t understand the law.”

“No.”

I picked up my phone.

“He understands symbols.”

Like rings.

Names.

Companies.

Fathers.

Ryan had spent years living as a dead man because Victor controlled the story of who he was.

Now he wanted to watch the document representing Victor’s failure disappear.

I typed:

Claire: No.

The reply came immediately.

Ryan: Then Victor gets to keep explaining things.

Claire: To whom?

A pause.

Then:

To Daniel.

A video arrived.

Victor looked directly at the camera.

His face was bruised now.

Not badly.

Enough.

And behind the camera Ryan said:

Tell him what happened after the crash.

Victor’s eyes moved away.

Ryan’s voice hardened.

Tell your son why Michael was still alive when you reached the truck.

Daniel stopped breathing beside me.

The video ended.

I stared at the frozen frame.

Daniel whispered, “Dad said there was nothing he could do.”

I looked at him.

Maybe Victor had lied about more than identity.

Maybe Michael Hayes had survived the impact.

And Victor’s greatest crime was not the defective truck.

It was what he chose after reaching it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: Victor Finally Confessed What He Did at the Crash, but His Truth Exposed Why
