family were approaching.

He took one look at Anna’s face and unlocked the office.

“Back room.”

We entered.

From the window, I saw the sedan stop beside the Shaw monument.

Voss exited.

Pike stayed in the passenger seat.

Voss looked at the bench.

He knew exactly where to look.

He crouched.

Saw the screws disturbed.

Then stood.

Even from a distance, I could feel the change in him.

He pulled out his phone.

Mine rang seconds later.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Voss.

“You found it.”

I did not respond.

He continued.

“Evan, what Thomas left will not protect Claire.”

“Maybe.”

“You think this is about money.”

“No.”

“Then you understand less than I hoped.”

“What is it about?”

“Control of evidence.”

“You mean your confession.”

Silence.

Then Voss laughed softly.

“So you opened it.”

“Yes.”

“You should read the last page.”

Anna looked at me.

We had not.

I opened the case.

The final page was folded separately.

Voss continued.

“Thomas never understood why I withdrew my statement.”

I unfolded it.

At the top was a handwritten note by Thomas.

LEONARD DID NOT WITHDRAW FOR VICTOR.

Below it:

HE WITHDREW AFTER PIKE THREATENED ANNA.

Anna went still.

Voss said through the phone:

“I spent thirty years trying to keep Samuel Pike from finding the girl I hid.”

Anna stared at me.

“What?”

Voss heard.

“Yes, Anna.”

He knew she was with me.

“I erased you from one system to save you from another.”

Anna grabbed the phone.

“You gave me to Harold Mercer.”

“Because Harold was the only judge Victor could not fully control.”

“That is not what we were told.”

“Then ask yourself why you survived.”

Anna’s face hardened.

“Because I was lucky.”

“No.”

Voss’s voice cracked for the first time.

“Because every time Pike found you, I moved you again.”

Foster care.

Broken records.

Changed placements.

What Anna had experienced as abandonment might also have hidden another pattern.

That did not excuse it.

But it changed the motive.

Anna whispered, “Why would Pike want me?”

Voss answered.

“Because Peter left the ledger to you.”

“He couldn’t know that when I was a baby.”

“No.”

“What did he want then?”

Voss looked toward Pike’s car.

Then said:

“You were not the child Pike was supposed to take from the hospital.”

Anna stopped breathing.

Claire had been Rebecca’s child by Vincent.

Anna was Daniel’s.

The records had been switched.

Rebecca had changed names before delivery.

Voss had removed one infant.

If he thought he was taking Vincent’s daughter but took Daniel’s instead—

Anna whispered, “Pike was supposed to take Claire.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Victor wanted Vincent’s child raised under Shaw control.”

“Then why hide me?”

“Because I realized the switch too late.”

Voss’s voice dropped.

“And once Pike learned I had taken the wrong baby, you became proof that we had failed.”

Pike stepped out of the sedan.

Voss turned.

His voice changed.

“Leave now.”

Anna stared through the window.

Pike was walking toward the cemetery office.

Not toward Voss.

Toward us.

Voss said urgently:

“Anna, he has been looking for you for thirty-one years.”

The office doorknob moved.

Click here to continue reading: PART 21: Pike Reached the Cemetery Office Before We Could Escape,
