admitted deliberately confusing Voss because she discovered Victor intended to take Vincent’s daughter.

She confirmed Anna was Daniel’s biological child and Claire was Vincent’s.

But the letter was not primarily about paternity.

It was about choice.

Rebecca wrote that neither girl owed loyalty to any man because of blood.

Not Vincent.

Not Daniel.

Not Thomas.

Not Victor.

Not anyone.

Claire began crying quietly.

Anna read over her shoulder.

Rebecca wrote that if the sisters ever found each other, she hoped they would not waste their lives deciding which family was “real.”

They were sisters.

That was real enough.

Anna sat beside Claire.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then Claire reached for her hand.

Anna took it.

Margaret turned away to give them privacy.

I did too.

After several minutes, Claire folded the letter.

“What else?”

The next document was Thomas’s final affidavit.

Not the recording.

A written summary.

He admitted laundering money for Victor between 1992 and 1999.

Admitted helping conceal Vincent’s survival.

Admitted lying to Elaine.

Admitted creating the account in my name without my knowledge.

Admitted bribing a hospital administrator to obtain copies of Claire and Anna’s original birth records.

Admitted destroying one set after fearing Victor would find them.

My father had done damage even while trying to repair damage.

No clean hero.

Then came a paragraph about 2005.

Thomas described sending Vincent away after Victor threatened me.

He wrote that Vincent left willingly once he understood the danger.

But Thomas also recorded Vincent’s destination.

Buffalo.

Then Toronto.

Then Montreal.

After that, one final location.

Halifax.

Claire looked
