torn acknowledgment behind the wall.

A decoy.

An incomplete copy.

The real original protected in the bank.

Daniel had understood his sister.

Perhaps too well.

Malik’s phone buzzed again.

This time he read a message.

“We recovered older bank footage.”

Diane’s heartbeat quickened.

“The six-month access?”

“Yes.”

“Who opened the box?”

Malik looked at Sanders.

“It wasn’t you.”

Sanders exhaled.

“Patricia?”

“No.”

“Daniel?”

“No.”

Malik turned the tablet toward them.

The grainy image showed a person at the vault desk.

The timestamp was six months earlier.

The face was unmistakable.

Carol.

Lily’s mother had entered Eleanor’s safe-deposit box using credentials tied to Sanders’s former employee.

Diane stared at the image.

“How?”

Malik said, “That’s what we’ll ask her.”

But Diane was looking at something else.

Carol was not alone.

At the edge of the frame stood a man holding the vault-room door.

Thomas Vane.

Daniel’s investigator.

Diane turned toward her uncle.

“You hired him.”

Daniel stared at the screen.

“Yes.”

“And he helped Carol enter Mom’s box.”

“I didn’t know.”

Diane no longer cared whether he sounded sincere.

Someone had crossed the lines between every supposed side.

Arthur and Daniel.

Daniel and Patricia.

Patricia and Sanders’s old firm.

Vane and Carol.

There were no clean alliances.

Only people trading access.

Malik enlarged the image.

Carol carried something when she entered.

A thin envelope.

When she left, the envelope was gone.

Diane thought of Daniel’s conveniently incriminating letter sitting inside the box.

“They planted it.”

Sanders nodded slowly.

“Most likely.”

“Why frame Daniel?”

Daniel answered before anyone else.

“Because Arthur never intended to pay me.”

Diane looked at him.

Daniel’s face had gone hard.

“If the sale succeeded, Arthur needed a way to remove me from the proceeds.”

Susan said, “And the letter makes you look like the architect.”

“Yes.”

Diane felt the logic settle into place.

Arthur had been preparing contingencies against everyone.

Against Diane if she refused.

Against Daniel if he demanded payment.

Perhaps against Carol too.

She looked at Malik.

“Where is Carol now?”

“We requested that she return for further questioning.”

“And Dad?”

“His attorney says he’ll cooperate.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

Malik’s expression changed slightly.

“We don’t currently have him in custody.”

Diane felt the first real alarm of the morning.

“Where is he?”

“We’re locating him.”

Susan took out her phone.

“He went home?”

Malik said nothing.

Diane already knew.

Arthur had spent the night watching the scheme collapse.

Now police had his phone, his messages, the fake transfer, Emily’s statement and the recording.

If he believed the bank box contained evidence he had not yet destroyed, he would know exactly where Diane had gone that morning.

Her phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

She opened the message.

A photograph appeared.

Her bedroom at Arthur’s house.

The mattress had been overturned.

Drawers emptied.

Closet doors open.

Below it was one sentence.

You should have signed when I asked.

Diane showed Malik.

His expression hardened instantly.

“Do not reply.”

A second message arrived.

This time, another photograph.

The wooden box.

Diane’s stomach dropped.

She looked at Susan.

“You brought it from Magnolia.”

Susan went pale.

“I left it at my house.”

Lily whispered, “Mom knows where Aunt Susan lives.”

The third message came before anyone could move.

The wooden box was open.

Eleanor’s eighteenth-birthday envelope was missing.

Diane stared at the screen.

Arthur had failed to reach the evidence in the bank.

So someone had gone after the one piece of her mother’s truth Diane had not yet fully read.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Someone Stole My Mother’s Last Letter, and Lily Made a
