outside Arthur’s reach.

Then she referred to a conversation with Arthur that Diane had never heard about.

Arthur had promised not to touch Diane’s education trust document said that if Arthur failed to replace the trust money within ninety days, Eleanor intended Sanders to petition for removal of Arthur from any remaining administrative role affecting Diane’s finances.

Arthur had ninety days.

Eleanor died before they expired.

Diane stared at the date.

“How many days after this did Mom now.

Not simply corrupt.

Not simply frightened.

A woman who had been entrusted with Diane’s protection and then accepted money instead.

Years later, perhaps administrative authority.

Arthur denied forging her name directly.

He said someone at the bank had accepted documents based on his role as Diane’s father.

Sanders muttered, “That distinction won’t help him.”

On the tape, Eleanor asked how much had been taken.

Arthur named a number slightly lower than Ruiz’s records showed.

Diane looked at Ruiz.

“He lied even while confessing.”

“Yes.”

Eleanor told him she had already documented the real he would never make Diane feel the cost of his mistake.

Diane opened her eyes.

Her father’s voice continued.

“I love her.”

Eleanor answered, “Then stop making love sound like a debt she owes you.”

The room became very still.

Arthur said, “You think I’m some monster.”

“No. I think you monster.

A man who kept turning fear into permission.

The recording ended with Eleanor saying she had given Patricia instructions in case Arthur broke the promise.

Arthur asked what instructions.

Eleanor refused to say.

He demanded the tape.

The recording stopped abruptly.

Ruiz removed the cassette.

Diane stared at the
