at me.

“She wanted you to lose the house.”

I said nothing.

“She thought if you lost it publicly after the television special, your business would weaken.”

“That was the plan?”

“She wanted lenders nervous.”

“Why?”

“So she could push a forced sale on two Holt Ridge projects through the shadow entities.”

Mercer moved closer.

“That wasn’t in the ledger.”

“It was new.”

“How new?”

“Two months.”

My company.

Not only my home.

She had planned to damage Holt Ridge’s credibility.

If my personal property became entangled in fraudulent debt, lenders might freeze financing or reevaluate risk.

A successful development business could collapse without any single dramatic theft.

All it required was doubt.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Brooke looked at me as if the answer were obvious.

“Because I didn’t think you would believe me.”

“You could have tried.”

“You hadn’t believed me about anything for years.”

I stared at her.

“That is an extraordinary thing to say.”

“I know.”

“You lied constantly.”

“I know.”

“You created the reason I wouldn’t believe you.”

“I know.”

Silence.

There was nothing to do with that except let it exist.

Brooke had finally faced the consequence liars often discover too late.

When the truth mattered most, she had spent all her credibility.

Mercer’s phone buzzed.

He read the message.

Then looked at Brooke.

“We found Rachel’s SUV.”

Brooke went rigid.

“Where?”

“Abandoned near Black Mountain.”

“The same area as Thomas’s crash?”

“Yes.”

My stomach tightened.

“Why go back there?”

Mercer continued reading.

“Vehicle has damage on the front passenger side.”

Brooke closed her eyes.

“Old damage?”

“We’ll determine.”

Another message arrived.

Mercer’s expression sharpened.

“What?”

He looked at me.

“Investigators found paint transfer embedded beneath repairs.”

“What color?”

“Blue.”

Thomas Vale’s car had been blue.

Brooke began shaking.

Mercer turned toward her.

“Rachel’s SUV may have been repaired after Thomas’s death.”

Brooke whispered, “I told you.”

“No,” I said.

She looked at me.

“You didn’t.”

That distinction mattered.

“You told us only after we proved where you were.”

Her face collapsed again.

I felt no satisfaction.

Mercer received one more call.

This one lasted longer.

He asked twice for clarification.

Then he ended it.

“We have a preliminary forensic comparison.”

“Of what?”

“The paint.”

Brooke looked terrified.

“It is consistent with the manufacturer color on Thomas Vale’s vehicle.”

The room fell silent.

Mercer continued.

“That does not establish exactly how the crash occurred.”

But we all understood what it meant.

Rachel’s SUV had likely made contact with Thomas’s car.

Thomas had died.

Brooke had been beside her.

And then Brooke had kept the secret for eighteen months.

I looked at my sister.

“What happens to her?”

Mercer answered carefully.

“That depends on evidence, prosecutors, and the full circumstances.”

Brooke did not ask whether she would be arrested.

She already knew.

Instead she looked at me.

“I’m sorry.”

I almost told her those words were too small.

Then I realized I was tired of measuring apologies before truth had finished arriving.

So I said nothing.

As I turned toward the door, Brooke called after me.

“There’s one more thing.”

I stopped.

“Of course there is.”

She flinched.

“Thomas didn’t create Ledger Zero only to expose Rachel.”

“What else?”

“He was hiding money.”

Mercer frowned.

“What money?”

“Money he took from the scheme.”

“How much?”

“I don’t know.”

“Where?”

Brooke looked at me.

“In property.”

A familiar dread returned.

“What property?”

“He said if everything fell apart, he had one asset Rachel could never touch.”

Mercer asked, “Which asset?”

Brooke swallowed.

“He called it the original Holt Ridge.”

And suddenly the question that had followed me since the envelope appeared on my parents’ porch had changed again.

Not who started my company.

Not who built the shadow company.

But what property had existed at the beginning of all of it—and why Thomas Vale believed it belonged in my story.

Click here to continue reading: PART
