Leo.

Nora.

My job.

The expansion project on my desk.

The apartment.

Arthur.

The strange, imperfect life I had built while lawyers counted everything behind me.

“I want one change.”

Patricia picked up her pen.

“What?”

“The children’s accounts get independent professional management until they are adults.”

“Reasonable.”

“No parent controls them.”

“Meaning you too.”

“Yes.”

She looked at me.

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

I had learned something about power.

Even good intentions can become dangerous when nobody has to explain themselves.

Patricia wrote the language.

The proposal went back.

Julian accepted.

Not immediately.

But before midnight.

When the mediator delivered the confirmation, I did not cry.

I expected to.

Instead I felt quiet.

Patricia leaned back.

“How do you feel?”

“Hungry.”

She laughed.

“That happened after the board testimony too.”

“Trauma makes me want sandwiches.”

“We should publish that.”

I looked at the signed preliminary settlement memorandum.

“Is it over?”

“The divorce terms are substantially resolved.”

“That was not what I asked.”

Patricia softened.

“No.”

I knew.

The company investigation remained.

The vendor money remained.

The trust signature remained.

Possible legal consequences remained.

And a settlement could divide property.

It could not repair a family.

Still, when I walked out of Patricia’s office after midnight, I realized something.

For the first time since Julian told me to leave, there was no major financial decision waiting for him to make about my life.

That part was over.

Then my phone rang.

Arthur.

“You’re awake?”

“Yes.”

“I heard mediation ended.”

“It did.”

“Did you settle?”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Then, quietly:

“Are you all right?”

I smiled.

“Yes.”

This time the answer was true.

Arthur exhaled.

“Good.”

I stepped onto the sidewalk.

Cold air hit my face.

“Arthur?”

“Yes?”

“What happens now?”

“With the company?”

“With everything.”

He was silent for a moment.

Then he said, “Now you get to find out what life looks like when every decision isn’t a response to Julian.”

The sentence followed me all the way home.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: With the Divorce Nearly Finished, Arthur Asked Me a Question I Could
