My back hurt before rain. I bought work shirts in packs and wore boots until the soles separated.

The other life was also genuine.

I had started with one small freight repair shop at twenty-four.

Then two.

Then a towing operation.

Then warehouse servicing.

Then regional distribution.

When larger companies wanted to buy me out, I sold pieces and retained the infrastructure they could not operate without.

I learned contracts because I was tired of being cheated by people who wore cleaner shirts.

I learned finance because banks charged ignorance like interest.

By fifty-five, my name was less important than the holding companies beneath it.

At sixty-seven, I stepped away from daily operations.

By then, trusts and private entities I controlled held stakes across a logistics network large enough that most people interacted with part of it without ever knowing I existed.

I kept my name out of newspapers because I liked privacy.

I kept my wealth away from Arianne’s dating life because I had seen money turn ordinary interest into devotion overnight.

When she introduced Derek, I watched him.

He saw the old pickup.

The small house.

The grease beneath my nails.

He relaxed.

That relaxation told me he believed I had nothing he wanted.

At the time, I had found that reassuring.

Later, I began to see the uglier side of the assumption.

Derek mocked my truck.

Bertha asked whether retirement on “a mechanic’s pension” was difficult.

Roger once offered me the name of a discount insurance agent.

None of it mattered enough to correct.

My ego could survive being underestimated.

Arianne’s body could not survive Derek’s contempt.

Victor was still waiting.

“I need you to wake the corporate team.”

There was a pause.

“All of them?”

“Yes.”

“Baldric, what exactly are you thinking?”

“I want every entity connected to Vance interests reviewed before business opens.”

Victor became completely awake.

The Vances were not as independent as they believed.

Roger Vance had spent three decades building a group of industrial service businesses, transport contracts, and property ventures.
