Until that morning, every new piece of evidence had forced her to reconsider a memory. Derek’s violence belonged to one category. The guarantees belonged to another. The trust information seemed like another betrayal layered beneath both.

Now the boundaries were gone.

Bertha had impersonated her.

Roger had known.

Derek had used information taken from Lena’s safe-deposit box.

And the deception had begun before Arianne walked down the aisle.

Naomi touched the legal pad beside her.

“We need investigators sometimes kept details private.

He reopened the laptop.

“There’s something else you should see.”

The recovered archive contained photographs.

Most were ordinary.

Gideon at birthdays.

Business dinners.

Christmas gatherings.

Pictures Derek had taken of cars, watches, hotel rooms, receipts, and documents.

Then Price opened an image dated six years earlier.

Three weeks before the wedding.

The photograph showed a table inside a private bank room.

On it lay several documents.

One was Lena’s trust summary.

Another showed an asset schedule.

At the edge of the frame sat a woman’s years.”

I recognized it too.

Cream leather.

Gold clasp.

Bertha had once spent an entire Thanksgiving dinner complaining because someone placed the bag on the floor.

Price enlarged the photograph.

A reflection appeared in the metal edge of the safe-deposit box.

Not enough for a full face.

Enough for part of one.

Dark hair.

Pearl earring.

Cream jacket.

Arianne whispered, “Bertha.”

The timestamp placed the photograph eleven minutes after Derek and the person signing Arianne’s name entered the box.

Naomi asked whether metadata remained intact.

Price said forensic staff were examining it.

Then he showed us another photograph.

Derek had photographed the page listing the Mercer Family Continuity Trust.

He had zoomed directly onto Arianne’s beneficiary language.

Arianne leaned back.

“So he knew.”

This time nobody corrected her with possibly.

The evidence was no longer a vague connection.

Derek had possessed a photograph of the another fifteen minutes because he wanted clarification about Lena’s documents and who legitimately had access.

I gave him every name I could remember.

When I finally walked outside, Victor was waiting beside my truck.

“You look terrible,” he said.

“You charge too much to speak that way to clients.”

“I’m not billing sat beside him.

She was explaining fractions.

For twenty minutes I watched my daughter perform one of the most ordinary tasks imaginable after learning that the foundation of her marriage might have included fraud.

There was courage in that.

Not dramatic courage.

The kind nobody photographs.

At four, Naomi called.

The bank had original.

The employee who admitted them had apparently overridden the standard requirement after Derek explained that his fiancée had lost her wallet.

A second employee had approved the exception.

Both were retired.

Naomi was trying to locate them.

Arianne listened on speaker.

“Was there a photograph of whoever came
