of Arianne’s recovered phone had produced another category of evidence.

Location-sharing settings.

A hidden family account had been configured on Arianne’s devices for years.

Derek had administrator access.

So did another account.

Bertha’s.

Arianne stared at the settings.

“She could see where I the work.

Arianne’s world had been monitored by people who then pretended their knowledge came naturally.

Her routines.

Her visits.

Her movements.

The next morning brought the first public consequences.

News of the investigation had begun circulating in local business circles.

No criminal charges had yet resolved anything, and Victor warned everyone under Mercer control not to speculate publicly.

Roger’s lenders began their own reviews.

Derek’s companies faced questions about the guarantees.

Nobody needed me to destroy anything.

Documents were doing the work.

At ten, Derek’s attorney sent Naomi a proposal.

Derek would agree to temporary single text:

You are destroying Gideon’s family.

Arianne stared at it.

Then blocked the number after preserving the message.

That afternoon, Detective Price came to the house.

He sat at my kitchen table, declined coffee, and spoke carefully.

“I can’t discuss every investigative step.”

Arianne summarized only what he was permitted to.

Reed’s assignment had changed after the first three months.

Initially, Roger requested information about Arianne’s contact with me and anyone connected to Mercer businesses.

Then Derek began communicating directly with Reed.

“What did Derek ask?” Arianne said.

“Whether you were meeting attorneys.”

Her face changed.

“I wasn’t.”

“We know.”

“What else?”

“Whether you had opened separate financial accounts.”

Eight months before she eventually did.

Derek had been anticipating escape long before Arianne consciously planned it.

Price continued.

“And whether you were researching divorce.”

Arianne stared.

“I wasn’t.”

“I understand.”

“Then why ask?”

Price could not answer motive.

But Reed’s final retained email could.

Derek had written:

If she starts thinking she can leave, I need to know before she realizes she’s serious.

Nobody spoke.

The sentence was chilling because it understood something intimate about control.

Derek had wanted to detect Arianne’s escape before Arianne herself fully formed the intention.

Price continued.

“There’s one more thing.”

He looked at me.

Then Arianne.

“Reed says he terminated the assignment after receiving a request he considered inappropriate.”

“What request?”

“He was asked to obtain copies of your father’s financial records.”

Arianne looked toward me.

“By Derek?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Five years ago.”

Soon after the trust documents were stolen.

“What did Reed do?”

“Refused.”

“Why?”

“He said the request went beyond surveillance into conduct he was unwilling to perform.”

“Did Derek stop?”

Price shook his head.

“We don’t know.”

My phone rang.

Victor.

I nearly scanned document appeared.

An old internal Mercer report.

Confidential.

Five years old.

The exact period reflected in the trust estimate Derek later used.

My stomach tightened.

“Where did you get this?”

“A lender produced it from Derek’s archived credit file.”

“How did Derek get it?”

“That’s what we’re trying to determine.”

I enlarged the scan.

At the bottom right corner was a faint mark.

Not printed.

A handwritten filing notation.

I recognized it.

Lena’s handwriting.

The report had once been in my home office.

The same office Derek helped me clear after her death.

Arianne came beside me.

She saw it too.

“Mom wrote that?”

“Yes.”

Victor spoke through the phone.

“There’s another page.”

I opened it.

This one contained internal asset estimates.

Not enough to access anything.

Enough to tell Derek exactly how large the Mercer holdings were.

Then I opened the third page.

A handwritten note appeared in the margin.

Not Lena’s.

Derek’s.

I recognized the sharp block lettering from birthday cards and business notes.

Beside a section describing Arianne’s future trust interests, he had written four words.

Not available until succession.

Arianne read them.

Her face drained.

Succession.

Not divorce.

Not inheritance in some distant abstract sense.

Succession meant after my death or incapacity under parts of the estate structure as it existed then.

Derek had known five years ago that the fortune he believed Arianne would control depended on what happened to me.

And suddenly every joke he had made about my age, every question about my health, and every unexpected interest he had shown in my estate planning required a second look.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: Derek’s Note About My Death Looked Like Greed Until Victor Found the
