13 – Derek’s Note About My Death Looked Like Greed Until Victor Found the Estate Change Lena Made Without Telling Him

I read Derek’s four handwritten words three times.

Not available until succession.

The paper lay on my kitchen table between Arianne and me while Victor remained on speakerphone.

Outside, Gideon dragged a plastic rake through fallen leaves and made a pile so small that every gust undid half his work.

Inside, nobody moved.

Arianne looked at the note.

Then at me.

“What exactly did succession mean in that version of the trust?”

Victor answered because I was still assembling the memory.

“Under the old structure, certain voting and beneficial interests would have transferred after Baldric’s death or permanent incapacity.”

Arianne’s face hardened.

“So Derek knew he couldn’t get near the larger assets while Dad was alive and functioning.”

“That appears to be what his note meant.”

“Appears?”

Naomi’s influence had made all of us more precise.

Victor corrected himself.

“The note strongly suggests he understood that limitation.”

I finally spoke.

“There was another version.”

Arianne turned toward me.

“What?”

“Lena changed the structure.”

“When?”

“Not long before she got sick.”

Victor went quiet.

That surprised me.

“You never told me that,” he said.

“I didn’t tell anyone except the estate counsel who drafted it.”

“You used separate counsel?”

“Yes.”

Arianne stared.

“Why?”

Because Lena and I had argued.

Not viciously.

But more sharply than we usually did.

She believed I was keeping too much control over assets intended eventually for Arianne.

I believed she was underestimating how money distorted relationships.

We were both probably right.

“She thought my structure gave future spouses too much incentive to wait for events they shouldn’t be thinking about.”

Arianne’s expression changed.

“Mom thought about that?”

“Your mother thought about everything.”

I went to the old locking cabinet in my study.

The key had not moved in years.

Inside were tax files, vehicle titles, Lena’s death certificate, and a sealed blue folder I had not opened since before her funeral.

I brought it to the kitchen.

Arianne watched me break the seal.

The amended trust removed automatic transfer of several controlling interests upon my death.

Instead, independent trustees would determine distributions according to protective conditions.

No spouse could access or pledge underlying assets merely through marriage.

Even Arianne’s direct access had been deliberately limited until specific milestones were met.

The structure was not absolute protection.

Nothing was.

But Derek’s expectation of a simple inheritance pathway had been obsolete before he married her.

Arianne read slowly.

“Did Derek know this version existed?”

“I don’t know.”

Victor said, “The report he stole was older.”

“Then probably not.”

Arianne tapped the page.

“So everything he thought he knew was wrong.”

“Yes.”

The sentence should have comforted me.

Instead it made the next question worse.

What had Derek done because he believed his information was accurate?

Victor asked me to send secure scans of the amended documents.

I did.

Then he said, “Baldric, there’s something else in the lender file.”

“What?”

“An insurance inquiry.”

Arianne froze.

“What kind?”

Victor hesitated.

“Key-person and family-continuity coverage.”

“On Dad?”

“An application draft.”

I felt the air leave the room.

“Who prepared it?”

“Derek’s company requested illustrations through a broker five years ago.”

Arianne stood.

“Was insurance taken out?”

“Not from what we’ve found.”

“Why would Derek’s company ask about insurance on my father?”

“That’s the question.”

I remembered Derek asking about my physicals.

Once after Christmas dinner.

Once while we were fishing with Gideon.

At the time his questions sounded like clumsy interest.

How’s your blood pressure?

Still seeing that cardiologist?

Do mechanics get lung problems from chemicals?

I had laughed them off.

Now every question acquired an edge.

Arianne paced to the sink.

“Did he ask you about life insurance?”

“Not directly.”

“Health?”

“Yes.”

“How often?”

“A few times.”

She closed her eyes.

Naomi arrived twenty minutes later after Victor called her.

She listened to everything before speaking.

“Do not jump from an insurance inquiry to an assumption that Derek intended physical harm.”

Arianne nodded, although disappointment flickered across her face.

She wanted certainty because certainty felt safer than possibilities.

Naomi continued.

“But the inquiry matters. We preserve it, identify the broker, determine who requested it, and establish the stated business purpose.”

“Could someone insure Dad without his knowledge?”

“Not ordinarily in the way people imagine. There are consent and insurable-interest requirements depending on policy type and jurisdiction. That’s why the abandoned inquiry itself may be more informative than a nonexistent policy.”

I admired her discipline.

She refused drama even when drama sat conveniently available.

Victor called again before lunch.

The broker was still practicing.

His old electronic records existed.

He remembered Derek.

That was becoming a recurring problem for Derek.

He behaved as though other people’s memories expired when he stopped needing them.

The broker’s file showed Derek had asked whether a policy could be structured around anticipated business dependence tied to future family control.

The broker rejected the premise.

There was no legitimate business relationship between me and Derek.

No insurable interest sufficient for the structure Derek proposed.

The inquiry ended.

Arianne listened from across the table.

“What reason did he give?”

Victor read the note.

“Prospective integration of family business assets following succession event.”

Arianne gave a hollow laugh.

“Integration.”

I knew that language.

It meant Derek expected to combine access to my assets with Vance interests after I was gone.

The arrogance almost impressed me.

Almost.

Arianne asked, “Did Roger know?”

“The broker copied Roger on one email.”

She looked at the ceiling.

“Of course.”

That afternoon Detective Price came by.

Naomi had already sent him the material.

He listened.

He asked questions.

Then he repeated the same warning Naomi had given.

Financial interest did not prove a plan for violence.

Arianne said, “I know.”

But her voice said she hated knowing.

Price then asked me something unexpected.

“Did you have any unexplained incidents involving your health or vehicle over the last five years?”

I thought.

“Health, no.”

“Vehicle?”

I almost dismissed it.

Then remembered.

“My brakes.”

Everyone looked at me.

“Three years ago.”

“What happened?”

“The pedal went soft.”

“Mechanical failure?”

“I thought so.”

“You repaired it?”

“Yes.”

“What failed?”

“A rear brake line.”

Price waited.

“That happens on old trucks,” I said.

“Was the line corroded?”

I started to answer.

Then stopped.

No.

It had bothered me at the time because the failure point looked too clean.

I blamed road damage.

A sharp object.

Debris.

Anything plausible.

I replaced the line and forgot it.

Arianne whispered, “Dad.”

“Old trucks break.”

Price asked, “Do you still have the old part?”

I almost smiled.

“I keep everything.”

My garage had boxes that irritated sensible people.

Old relays.

Fuel pumps.

Belts.

Bolts.

Metal pieces I could not throw away because someday they might teach me why something failed.

We went outside.

Gideon followed until Arianne redirected him toward the kitchen with a snack.

I found the brake line in a labeled bin.

July, three years earlier.

Price examined it without touching more than necessary.

The split was small.

Straight.

Too straight.

My stomach tightened.

“Could someone cut it?” he asked.

“Yes.”

“Could road debris make that?”

“Yes.”

“Which is more likely?”

“I can’t tell from memory.”

That answer cost me.

A mechanic should know.

But a father’s fear is not expertise.

Price photographed the part and arranged to collect it properly.

Then he asked who had access to my truck around that time.

I thought through the week.

My house.

The grocery store.

Church.

Arianne and Derek’s place.

That visit surfaced clearly.

Gideon’s third birthday.

I had parked behind the Vance guest garage for almost six hours.

Derek had complained that my truck leaked oil on the stone.

It didn’t.

Roger moved his sedan once.

Bertha spent most of the afternoon inside.

Dozens of guests came and went.

The opportunity list was uselessly large.

Arianne sat down on the garage stool.

“When did the brakes fail?”

“The next morning.”

She covered her mouth.

Naomi said, “We do not know that anyone touched the vehicle.”

“I know.”

Arianne lowered her hands.

“Please stop telling me what we don’t know.”

Naomi’s expression softened slightly.

“I will when the distinction stops protecting you.”

Arianne looked at her.

Then nodded.

Fair.

Price collected the line.

We returned to the kitchen.

Gideon had drawn a picture while we were outside.

My blue truck.

Arianne.

Himself.

Me.

Four stick figures beside it.

No Derek.

Children redraw families before adults admit they have changed.

That evening, Victor found another email.

Not from Derek.

From Bertha to Roger.

Dated the night after my brake failure.

Subject line: Baldric.

The message was only one sentence.

He was lucky.

Arianne read it.

No one spoke.

Price cautioned us again that context was unknown.

Maybe Bertha had heard about the brake failure.

Maybe she meant exactly what the words said and nothing more.

But then Victor found Roger’s reply.

Yes. Derek is an idiot.

I felt no dramatic shock.

Only a cold mechanical clarity.

Like hearing an engine knock and finally identifying the bearing.

Arianne looked at me.

Her voice was almost gone.

“Dad.”

I reached for the chair.

Not because I felt weak.

Because rage had suddenly become physical.

Naomi called Price.

Price told us not to contact anyone.

No confrontation.

No warning.

No dramatic questions.

He wanted the email chain preserved exactly as found.

Arianne stared at the screen.

Then she whispered, “Derek didn’t just want me trapped.”

I said nothing.

She looked at the old trust document again.

Not available until succession.

Then at the email.

He was lucky.

Then Roger’s answer.

Derek is an idiot.

For the first time, we had evidence suggesting Derek’s interest in my death might not have remained financial fantasy.

And if the damaged brake line proved deliberate, the story had crossed into something none of us had been prepared to name.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: The Cut Brake Line Was Not an Accident, and Roger’s Attempt to Explain It Made Derek’s Story Even More Dangerous

I read Derek’s four handwritten words three times.
