Intent beyond that will require additional evidence.”

Arianne looked at her.

“You know what happens when somebody cuts a brake line.”

“Yes.”

“Then say it.”

Naomi held her gaze.

“The damage created a serious risk that the brakes would fail while he was driving.”

That was as far as she would go.

It was enough.

Gideon was at school for his first half-day back.

He had insisted.

Arianne had nearly refused.

Then she realized keeping him home because she was frightened could become another kind of cage.

So he went.

A security plan existed.

Teachers knew who could pick him up.

Derek could not.

Bertha could not.

Roger could not.

The normality of those administrative facts made everything feel stranger.

Price arrived before noon.

He had already seen the report.

“We need to revisit the timing.”

I gave him the date again.

Gideon’s birthday gathering.

Truck parked behind the guest garage.

Failure the next morning.

Price had obtained old photographs from the party.

That sentence startled me.

Photographs had become evidence repeatedly in this family.

Most people now documented their lives constantly without realizing what a future investigator might reconstruct.

One image showed my truck in the background at 2:14 p.m.

Another at 3:02.

Then a photograph at 4:47 captured Derek walking near the guest garage.

That proved little.

It was his parents’ property.

But another image, taken by a catering employee and posted publicly years earlier, showed Derek crouched near the rear side of my truck.

He appeared to be looking downward.

Arianne stared.

“Why would he be there?”

Price said, “We don’t know.”

I examined the image.

The angle placed him near the wheel behind which the damaged brake line ran.

Still not proof.

But closer.

Price had also found a message Derek sent Roger at 5:03.

Done.

Roger replied:

Stop texting me about this.

Arianne whispered, “Oh God.”

Price did not react.

“What was done?” Naomi asked.

“We don’t know yet.”

That was still true.

A phrase is not a confession simply because context makes it frightening.

But context was becoming difficult to ignore.

Price had interviewed two former household employees.

One remembered seeing Derek carrying a small tool roll that afternoon.

Another remembered Roger and Derek arguing in the study near sunset.

About what?

He could not hear.

Bertha had been questioned again.

Her attorney was now present.

She denied knowing about any brake-line damage.

When shown her email—He was lucky—she claimed she was referring to the fact that I had avoided a serious accident after telling the family about the failure.

Possible.

Then came the problem.

Phone records indicated Bertha sent that email at 6:18 a.m.

I had not discovered the brake failure until 7:05.

I knew because I called roadside assistance at 7:12.

Bertha claimed the timestamp must be wrong.

It was not.

Arianne stood and walked away from the table.

Naomi let her.

Price continued.

Roger had requested another meeting through counsel.

This time not with me.

With investigators.

He wanted to amend his previous statement.

“What does that mean?” Arianne asked.

“He says he withheld information.”

“About the brakes?”

Price did not answer directly.

That meant yes.

The interview happened that afternoon.

We were not present.

Roger’s attorney later authorized Naomi to receive a limited summary because Roger wanted Arianne to understand his position.

His position was ugly.

Roger admitted Derek had talked about “accelerating succession.”

That was Derek’s phrase.

Months before the brake incident, Derek repeatedly complained that my continued control prevented what he called rational family consolidation.

Roger claimed he dismissed the talk as fantasy.

Then, on Gideon’s birthday, Derek asked where I had parked.

Roger said he thought nothing of it.

Later he saw Derek near the garage with tools.

Roger confronted him.

Derek said he was checking an oil leak.

Roger believed him.

Or claimed he did.

The next morning, before anyone publicly knew about my brake failure, Derek called Roger.

According to Roger, Derek said:

It didn’t happen.

Roger asked what he meant.

Derek refused to explain.

Minutes later Bertha sent her email.

He was lucky.

Roger then replied:

Yes. Derek is an idiot.

Arianne stared at the summary.

“What did Roger think ‘it didn’t happen’ meant?”

Naomi read the next line.

“Roger says he suspected Derek had tampered with the truck but did not know.”

Arianne’s face changed.

“And he didn’t call Dad.”

“No.”

“Didn’t call police.”

“No.”

“Didn’t tell me.”

“No.”

“Six years of family dinners.”

I heard the hurt beneath the anger.

“Birthdays.
