place with mismatched wooden chairs, paper-covered tables, and enough background noise to make silence feel less dangerous.

Nothing about it looked romantic.

That helped.

Mabel sat in a high chair between us, chewing on the corner of a laminated menu while Elise studied the actual food choices.

“You’re letting her eat that.”

“She appears committed.”

“It’s been touched by strangers.”

“So has the high chair.”

“That is not it.

Mabel slapped it against the table with both hands.

For a few minutes, the evening remained easy.

We ordered.

We discussed daycare.

We argued mildly over whether Mabel actually liked peas or merely tolerated them.

Elise claimed she had photographic evidence of disgust.

I said facial expressions should not be treated as sworn testimony.

The server brought water.

Mabel tried to put a lemon wedge in her mouth.

We stopped her at exactly the same time.

Our hands collided.

Both of us withdrew.

The moment lasted less than a second.

It still changed the air.

I looked toward the kitchen.

Elise adjusted Mabel’s cup.

Neither of us commented.

When the food arrived, Mabel spent more time dropping pieces of pasta than eating them.

I bent down twice to retrieve them before remembering the pediatrician’s advice and giving up.

“She’s winning,” Elise said.

“She has always been winning.”

“You’re just noticing?”

“Apparently I’m slow.”

That earned a quiet smile.

Then we ate.

I had expected tension.

Instead, conversation drifted around ordinary things.

A project at my office.

A difficult client.

Elise’s manager.

Her decision to pursue a local promotion rather than the Bellhaven job.

She spoke more freely about work than she had when we were married.

That realization bothered me.

Not because she had changed.

Because I had never listened closely enough to know how much she had once wanted to repair.

No explosion.

Just two people learning not to turn every bruise into a weapon.

After dinner, we walked outside.

The air had turned cool.

Mabel wore a tiny hooded jacket and insisted on holding both our index fingers while taking uncertain steps along the sidewalk.

She moved slowly.

One foot.

Then the other.

Her concentration was so serious that Elise and I both became quiet.

Eventually Mabel stumbled.

I caught her under one arm.

Elise steadied the other.

For a moment we stood close.

Our daughter between us.

It looked like a family.

That thought arrived without permission.

I stepped back first.

Elise meant something it didn’t.”

Elise’s expression became unreadable.

Mabel tugged both our hands again.

We continued walking.

After half a block, Elise said, “You think I invited you to dinner because I’m confused.”

“I think I don’t know why you invited me.”

“That’s arms.

“I spend a lot of time with you now.”

“Because of Mabel.”

“Mostly.”

Mostly.

The word changed something.

I said
