sighed.

“How good is it?”

“Very.”

“Then keep it.”

“You sure?”

“If you ask me again, I’m returning you.”

We kept the television.

More importantly, we kept talking.

Three months passed.

The house slowly stopped feeling new.

Mabel’s fingerprints appeared on the lower windows.

A scratch developed on the dining table.

My shoes accumulated near the garage door despite repeated promises to move them.

Elise left coffee mugs in her office.

We became irritated.

We became tired.

We sometimes went to bed without solving everything.

And nothing collapsed.

That was the revelation.

Conflict did not automatically mean betrayal.

Annoyance did not mean abandonment.

A closed office door could simply mean someone wanted quiet.

A late meeting could simply be a late meeting.

One night, I woke at two-thirty and found Elise missing from bed.

My stomach tightened automatically.

I went downstairs.

She sat at the kitchen table in the dark.

I switched on the small light above the stove.

“You okay?”

She looked at me.

“I couldn’t sleep.”

I sat across from her.

“Work?”

“No.”

“Mabel?”

“No.”

I waited.

Elise stared at the table.

“Tomorrow is the anniversary.”

I knew immediately.

The day she left.

The first envelope.

The empty house.

The shopping bags.

My chest tightened.

“I didn’t realize.”

“I did.”

Of course she had.

“I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

She looked around our kitchen.

“Last year at this time, I was packing.”

I stayed quiet.

“Natalie had Mabel for two hours.”

Her voice was distant.

“I remember folding those tiny clothes and thinking I was ruining her life.”

“You weren’t.”

“I didn’t know that.”

“No.”

“I kept waiting for you to come home.”

My throat tightened.

“I was with Corinne.”

“Yes.”

No anger in the word.

That made it worse.

Elise looked at me.

“Do you know what I remember most?”

“What?”

“How clean I left the house.”

I frowned.

“I noticed.”

“I cleaned because I couldn’t control anything else.”

Her eyes filled.

“I wiped the kitchen counter three times.”

I remembered the spotless surfaces.

The envelope.

The empty drying rack.

“I’m sorry.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

I reached across the table but stopped halfway.

Elise placed her hand in mine.

We sat in the dim kitchen.

No speeches.

No promises.

Eventually she said, “I’m glad I left.”

The words hurt.

I let them.

“I’m glad you did too.”

Her eyes lifted.

“You mean that?”

“Yes.”

“Even now?”

“Especially now.”

She squeezed my hand.

“If you hadn’t left, I might never have changed.”

“That wasn’t why I left.”

“I know.”

“You don’t get to turn it into something I did for you.”

“I won’t.”

That mattered.

Her leaving belonged to her.

Her survival was not the first chapter of my redemption story.

It had been an act of self-preservation.

We sat until almost four.

Before going upstairs, Elise stopped in the hallway.

“Daniel.”

“Yeah?”

“I’m happy here.”

The sentence was quiet.

Not dramatic.

It affected me more than almost anything she had said since returning to my life.

“So am I.”

She touched my face.

Then kissed me.

The following morning, Mabel woke before six and demanded breakfast.

Ordinary life resumed.

But something had shifted.

The anniversary had arrived.

We had not avoided it.

We had not allowed it to swallow us.

And for the first time, the house we shared felt less like an experiment.

It felt like home.

<a
