baby.”

Elise crouched and pulled her close.

“Mommy’s happy.”

Mabel looked at me.

“Daddy?”

“Daddy’s trying not to pass out.”

Elise laughed.

I put the ring on her finger.

Mabel immediately tried to take it.

“No,” we both said.

She frowned.

Then returned to her mud.

Elise looked at the ring.

“It’s beautiful.”

“Natalie helped.”

Her eyebrows rose.

“You willingly went jewelry shopping with Natalie?”

“I’ve faced less intimidating attorneys.”

“That woman loves me.”

“Terrifyingly.”

Elise touched my face.

Then kissed me.

There was no applause.

No audience.

No photographer.

Just our daughter digging in the yard.

Coffee cooling on the patio.

A lawn I needed to mow.

A sink upstairs I had eventually managed to repair.

It was nothing like our first engagement.

That was why it felt right.

Later that afternoon, Elise called her parents.

I called Mom and Marcus.

Everyone already knew I had the ring.

Apparently I had been the last person trusted with the secret.

That evening, after Mabel slept, Elise and I sat on the couch.

She kept looking at her hand.

“Nervous?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“Regret?”

“No.”

“Good.”

“You?”

“Terrified.”

“Good.”

I laughed.

She leaned against me.

“When should we do it?”

“No rush.”

“Small.”

“Definitely.”

“Family.”

“Yes.”

“No giant reception.”

“Agreed.”

“No speeches about second chances.”

“Please.”

“No pretending the divorce never happened.”

“Absolutely.”

She rested her head against my shoulder.

“And I’m still keeping Bennett.”

“I know.”

“Mabel stays Morgan.”

“Yes.”

“You’re really okay with that?”

“Our family doesn’t need matching labels.”

She became quiet.

Then said, “You really are different.”

I shook my head.

“Some things are different.”

“Why won’t you just take the compliment?”

“Because I don’t want ‘changed’ to become a finish line.”

Elise lifted her head.

“That sounds exhausting.”

“Apparently this is my personality now.”

She smiled.

“Fine.”

Then she kissed my cheek.

“Keep going.”

Our wedding would happen months later.

The story was not finished.

Marriage would not be the ending.

There were still choices ahead that would test everything we had built.

But that night, sitting in the house we had chosen after losing the first version of our family, I finally understood something I had once been too selfish to
