executive floor and found Caleb downstairs.

He was sitting at my old desk.

My cardboard box was still underneath.

I had never taken it home.

He looked up.

“What happened?”

“Grant’s still suspended.”

“And me?”

“What about you?”

“The list.”

I nodded.

Then his expression changed.

“Daniel.”

“What?”

“Your computer.”

“My computer is gone.”

“No. Your old field laptop.”

“I turned it in Friday.”

“I know.”

“What about it?”

“IT brought it back to reimage it.”

My stomach tightened.

“And?”

“There’s a folder on it that wasn’t yours.”

He rotated the screen.

A directory sat on the desktop.

TRANSFER_ARCHIVE.

“I didn’t make that.”

“I know.”

“Who did?”

“Metadata says Derek.”

“When?”

Caleb clicked properties.

Three months earlier.

The folder contained compressed files.

Payroll exports.

Adjustment reports.

Executive approvals.

Copies of friction spreadsheets.

And a document labeled READ_IF_NEEDED.

I opened it.

One page.

Derek’s name at the bottom.

Daniel—

If you are reading this, the system finally turned on me too.

I helped build it. I told myself Grant only wanted accountability. By the time I understood what he was doing, I had already approved things I should never have approved.

I kept copies because I knew one day he would need somebody else to blame.

There are records Grant does not know I saved.

Do not assume Evelyn is clean.

Do not assume I am either.

The file ended with an address.

Not Derek’s home.

A storage facility across town.

Below it was a unit number.

And beneath that, one final sentence.

The real ledger is there.

I read it twice.

Then I looked at Caleb.

Grant had finally explained enough to expose the machinery.

Derek had vanished.

And somewhere across Columbus was a ledger that one of the architects of the system believed was more dangerous than everything we had already found.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The Storage Unit Held Derek’s Private Ledger, but the First Page Made Me Question Who Had Really Designed the Scheme

Grant returned to Hartwell at nine the next morning with an attorney.
