Inconsistent."

I knew he was choosing words that would survive court.

I hated them anyway.

Then the digital forensics technician entered.

"We recovered the memory card."

My stomach tightened.

"What's on it?"

"Photographs."

"Of what?"

"Documents mostly."

My mother had photographed paperwork.

Bank statements.

Trust pages.

Medication packaging.

And one photograph taken in a mirror.

The technician rotated the screen.

My mother lay in bed.

Thin.

Pale.

Holding the camera.

Behind her, reflected in the mirror, stood my father and Peter Mallory.

The timestamp read 9:51 p.m.

Three minutes after Peter supposedly declared her incapable of understanding her surroundings.

In the photograph, my mother was holding Peter's assessment.

And pointing at it.

On the back of the printed copy, in her handwriting, she had written:

FALSE.

I stopped breathing.

Susan turned away.

Mr. Sanders removed his glasses.

Hernandez stared at the image for a long time.

"That's significant."

It was the closest I had heard him come to saying we had caught someone.

Another photograph showed the pills.

Another showed a document I hadn't seen before.

It was titled SPOUSAL MEDICAL AUTHORIZATION.

Arthur's name appeared beneath it.

The next image showed my mother's handwritten note across the document:

I DID NOT CONSENT.

My hands went numb.

"What happened at the hospital?"

Hernandez opened the archived records.

"She arrived unconscious."

"But the intake says confused."

"That's Arthur's description of her condition before transport."

"Was she conscious in the ambulance?"

"We don't have those records yet."

Susan asked, "What was the cause of death?"

"Complications associated with metastatic cancer."

I looked at him.

"Could the pills have caused it?"

"We don't know."

"Could sedation have contributed?"

"We don't know."

"Could Dad have—"

"Diane."

I stopped.

He wasn't silencing me.

He was preventing me from finishing a sentence neither of us could support.

Fine.

Documents.

Evidence.

One step at a time.

Then the technician said, "There's something else on the card."

A short video.

Seventeen seconds.

My mother had apparently activated the camera accidentally or deliberately while placing it down.

The image mostly showed blankets.

But the audio was clear.

Peter said, "If she won't take them, dissolve it."

My father's voice answered.

"How much?"

Peter replied, "Enough to calm her."

Then Marianne's voice:

"No. Absolutely not."

The clip ended.

Nobody spoke.

Hernandez immediately asked the technician to replay it.

Same words.

Same voices.

"Is that illegal?" I asked.

He didn't answer.

Instead, he called someone.

"Get Cole back on the phone."

Marianne answered twenty minutes later by video.

She looked exhausted.

Gray hair.

No makeup.

She stared at the photograph of my mother before looking at us.

"I should've told someone."

Hernandez asked, "Told someone what?"

Marianne closed her eyes.

"Peter crushed one of the tablets."

My heart slammed against my ribs.

"Did he give it to her?"

"I don't know."

"Who did?"

"I left."

"When?"

"After Arthur and I argued."

"Why?"

"Because Peter said Eleanor was hysterical."

"Was she?"

"No."

"Was she confused?"

"No."

"Was she incapable of making decisions?"

"No."

Hernandez leaned forward.

"Why didn't you tell the hospital?"

Marianne looked at the camera.

"Arthur called me after she died."

"What did he say?"

"He said if I told anyone I'd been at the house, he'd tell my husband about us and blame me for everything."

"So you stayed silent."

"Yes."

"For ten years."

She began crying.

"Yes."

I felt no sympathy.

Not then.

Maybe later.

Hernandez asked the question I needed answered.

"Who prepared the drink?"

Marianne wiped her face.

"I saw Arthur in the kitchen."

My fingers went cold.

"Doing what?"

"Mixing something into juice."

The room disappeared around me.

Hernandez's voice remained calm.

"Did you see what he put into it?"

"No."

"Did you see Eleanor drink it?"

"No."

"Did you see Arthur give it to her?"

"No."

The answer mattered.

It stopped the story my mind was already constructing.

We still didn't know.

Then Marianne added:

"But when I left, the glass was on the tray beside her bed."

Susan covered her mouth.

I stared at my mother's photograph.

The police had evidence that Peter brought unprescribed pills.

Evidence that he suggested dissolving one.

Evidence that my father asked how much.

Evidence that Arthur prepared a drink.

But no proof my mother drank it.

Not yet.

Hernandez's phone buzzed.

He read the message.

"Lab expedited the tablets."

"And?"

"They've identified the drug."

"What is it?"

He told us.

A strong sedative.

Then he added the detail that changed the room.

"It appears in Eleanor Reynolds'
