15 – My Mother’s Master Recording Captured What Happened After the Other Tape Ended, and the Truth Was Worse Than the Murder I Feared

The master recording began with the same conversation we had already heard.

Arthur asking my mother to settle the trust.

Peter calling her emotionally impaired.

Marianne trying to leave.

My mother refusing the pills.

I listened from the police station with Susan, Carol, Mr. Sanders, and two detectives.

Nobody sat near Carol.

When the familiar section ended, static followed.

Then silence.

The first recovered cassette had stopped there.

The master didn't.

A click sounded.

My mother's breathing returned.

Faint.

Arthur's footsteps.

"Where's the recorder?"

"I don't know."

"You had something."

"Get out."

"Give it to me."

My mother's voice was weaker now but still coherent.

"No."

Something struck furniture.

Then Peter.

"Arthur."

"She recorded us."

"So?"

"So destroy it."

"Later."

My father said, "Eleanor, listen to me."

"No."

"You think Susan can raise Diane?"

"Better than you."

Carol looked at me but I didn't turn.

Arthur's voice hardened.

"You're going to leave me with a child who hates me and a company Victor can take apart whenever he wants."

"Then perhaps you shouldn't have borrowed his money."

"You don't understand what I built."

"I understand exactly what you spent."

Peter interrupted.

"We're done."

Then came a sound.

Liquid pouring.

My hands tightened.

Peter said, "Take this."

Mom answered, "No."

"It's water."

"No."

Arthur said, "Eleanor."

"No."

A glass touched something.

Then Marianne.

"Arthur, don't."

My heart stopped.

Peter said, "It will calm her down."

"She said no."

"Marianne, leave."

"I am leaving."

A door opened.

My mother called, "Marianne."

The woman stopped.

"If anything happens, tell Daniel."

Marianne whispered, "I will."

She hadn't.

Not for ten years.

A door slammed.

Then three people remained.

My mother.

Arthur.

Peter.

The room on the recording became quiet.

Peter said, "She needs rest."

Arthur answered, "She needs to stop fighting."

"Same thing tonight."

My mother's voice:

"I can hear you."

Peter laughed.

"I know."

Then something horrifying happened.

Nothing dramatic.

No scream.

No impact.

Only Arthur saying, "Give me the glass."

A pause.

Then my mother:

"Don't."

Liquid moved again.

Peter said, "Not all of it."

Arthur answered, "You said enough to calm her."

"Arthur."

"What?"

"You're not measuring."

Silence.

My chest felt hollow.

Susan covered her mouth.

Carol stared at the table.

The recording continued.

My mother coughed.

Then gasped.

Peter cursed.

Arthur said, "Eleanor?"

No answer.

"Eleanor."

Movement.

A chair falling.

Peter said, "Check her."

"You check her."

"I'm not her physician."

"You brought the medication!"

"Arthur."

"Do something."

My father sounded frightened now.

Genuinely frightened.

Peter's voice sharpened.

"Call emergency services."

"Not yet."

I looked at Hernandez.

He had returned moments earlier but hadn't spoken.

On the tape, Peter shouted.

"Call now."

Arthur said, "If they find the pills—"

"Then say hospice gave them."

"She's not in hospice."

"Then say Singh prescribed them."

"He didn't."

"Arthur!"

A phone keypad sounded.

My father called emergency services.

That mattered.

He called.

Maybe too late.

Maybe not.

The recording skipped several minutes.

Then my mother made a sound.

A tiny one.

Arthur said, "She's awake."

Peter answered, "Eleanor?"

My mother whispered something.

The volume was raised.

We listened again.

"Diane."

My throat closed.

Arthur leaned close to her on the recording.

"She's with Susan."

Mom whispered, "Good."

That single word broke something inside me.

Good.

Even drugged, frightened, dying, she knew I was with someone safe.

Then she said:

"Arthur… don't take hers."

My father's voice cracked.

"I won't."

"Promise."

Silence.

"Promise."

Arthur answered:

"I promise."

I stared at the speaker.

The cruelty of it was almost unbearable.

He had promised her while the drug Peter brought was already inside her.

Then spent ten years taking exactly what she begged him not to take.

Peter said, "Ambulance is coming."

My mother whispered one more thing.

"Daniel."

Then the recording stopped again.

But it still wasn't over.

Several minutes of blank audio followed.

Then voices returned.

Different acoustics.

A car.

My father and Peter were driving.

Peter said, "The tape."

Arthur answered, "I couldn't find it."

"You need to."

"I will."

"If she lives, we're finished."

Nobody breathed.

My father answered:

"She won't."

Carol covered her face.

Susan made a low sound beside me.

I felt strangely calm.

Not because the words weren't horrifying.

Because context mattered.

Arthur might have meant my mother was terminal and unlikely to survive the night.

Or he might have meant something worse.

Hernandez did not react outwardly.

Peter said, "You don't know that."

Arthur replied, "Singh said days."

"Days isn't tonight."

"She was already barely breathing."

"Because you poured too much."

There it was.

Clear.

Direct.

My stomach turned.

Arthur shouted, "You told me to give it to her!"

"I said enough to calm her."

"You crushed it."

"And you dumped it into the juice."

Susan stood and left the room.

I couldn't.

I was frozen in the chair.

Peter continued.

"If toxicology comes back, you keep me out of it."

"And if she wakes up?"

"She already told the hospital you were trying to change documents."

"She was barely conscious."

"Then pray they treat it like confusion."

My father said nothing.

Peter lowered his voice.

"I can prepare an assessment."

"You already did."

"Then use it."

Another pause.

Arthur said, "What about Susan?"

"Keep her away."

"And Daniel?"

"Tell him Eleanor changed her mind before she lost capacity."

"She didn't sign."

"Then we handle it later."

"How?"

Peter laughed softly.

"The same way Victor handles people who can't sign."

The tape clicked off.

This time, truly off.

Nobody spoke for almost a minute.

I stared at the table.

The murder I had feared was not what the tape proved.

There had been no plan to kill my mother.

No conversation about ending her life.

No deliberate poisoning designed to murder her.

The truth was uglier in a different way.

They wanted her compliant.

Arthur wanted the argument over.

Peter wanted her sedated.

My father poured too much of a drug she had refused into her drink.

Then, when she collapsed, his first concern was not immediately saving her.

It was the pills.

The documents.

The recording.

Whether the hospital would ask questions.

Her death may still have been caused principally by cancer.

But her last conscious hours had been stolen from her.

That was enough.

Hernandez finally spoke.

"This changes the investigation."

Carol lowered her hands.

"Are you arresting Arthur?"

"We're evaluating charges with prosecutors."

"What about Peter?"

"We have probable cause for multiple offenses independent of Eleanor's death."

I looked at him.

"Lily?"

His face changed.

That reminded us why he had returned.

"We found her."

Carol stood so fast her chair fell.

"What?"

"She's alive."

I was already moving.

"Where?"

"County hospital."

"Why?"

"Exposure, dehydration, minor injuries."

"What happened?"

"Peter left her in an abandoned agricultural building when officers got close."

Carol began sobbing.

I had never seen her cry that way.

No control.

No concern for how she looked.

"Can we see her?"

"Yes."

"Peter?"

Hernandez's expression hardened.

"He got away on foot."

Of course he did.

The hospital was thirty minutes away.

I barely remember the drive.

Lily lay in a curtained emergency room bay wearing a hospital gown and thick socks.

There was a scrape along her temple.

Carol reached her first.

"Lily."

Lily turned her face away.

The movement stopped Carol more effectively than any police officer could have.

I stood near the curtain.

Lily saw me.

"Diane."

I went to her.

She grabbed my hand.

Hard.

"You okay?"

She nodded.

Then shook her head.

"Not really."

"Fair."

She looked past me toward Carol.

"He told me."

Carol began, "Honey—"

"No."

The same word Lily had used at the ballroom.

Stronger now.

"You lied about my father."

Carol sat down slowly.

"Yes."

"You lied about Grandpa paying my school."

"Yes."

"You knew Diane's money paid for me?"

Carol looked at me.

Then back at Lily.

"I found out years later."

"When?"

Carol hesitated.

Lily noticed.

"When?"

"Two years ago."

The room went silent.

I felt the answer physically.

Two years.

Not this week.

Not during the investigation.

Carol had known for two years that Arthur used my inheritance to fund Lily.

And she stayed silent.

"I didn't know at the beginning," she said quickly.

Lily's eyes filled.

"But you knew later."

"Yes."

"Did you give anything back?"

Carol didn't answer.

"Did you tell Diane?"

"No."

"Did you stop Dad?"

"No."

Lily released my hand.

Not because of me.

Because she needed both hands to wipe her face.

Carol whispered, "I'm sorry."

Lily looked at her.

"So am I."

Not forgiveness.

A boundary.

Hernandez entered.

"We need Lily's statement when she's ready."

"Tomorrow," I said.

He nodded.

Then Lily touched my wrist.

"I have something."

"What?"

"When Peter left me, he dropped his bag."

"Police found it."

"No."

She shook her head.

"He dropped another thing."

She reached beneath the hospital blanket.

A small metal key lay in her palm.

"He came back looking for it. I put it in my shoe."

Hernandez took out an evidence bag.

"What does it open?"

"I don't know."

There was a number engraved on it.

27.

Carol stared.

"I know."

Everyone turned.

"What?"

She whispered, "Locker twenty-seven."

"Where?"

"Union Station."

Peter Mallory had escaped.

But the one thing he risked returning to search for had been hidden in Lily's shoe.

And if Carol was right, it opened whatever he still considered important enough to risk his freedom for.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: Locker Twenty-Seven Held Peter’s Insurance File, and One Final Ledger Proved My Father’s Plan Started Before I Was Old Enough to Read

The master recording began with the same conversation we had already heard.
