is.”

“It could become that very easily.”

He said nothing.

“I’ll handle Sarah.”

“How?”

“I haven’t decided.”

“I don’t like this.”

“Neither do I.”

He sounded suddenly exhausted.

“She told me she was done with the property stuff.”

“Apparently not.”

“I’ll call you later.”

“David.”

“Yes?”

“Do not confront her in anger and then come tell me what she said.”

He was quiet.

“You know me too well.”

“I’m your mother.”

Despite everything, he laughed.

“I’ll talk to you later.”

The call ended.

That afternoon, I drove to the city house.

I had not spent the night there in almost two weeks.

The rooms smelled closed.

I opened windows.

Then I went to the garage.

David and Sarah still had boxes there.

Dozens.

Holiday decorations.

Old business records.

Children’s clothes.

Furniture wrapped in blankets.

For years, I had stepped around them.

That day I looked at them differently.

Not as clutter.

As another assumption.

I began reading labels.

Most were harmless.

CHRISTMAS.

TWINS BABY CLOTHES.

KITCHEN.

Then I found a plastic file bin beneath a blanket.

DAVID BUSINESS.

I almost left it alone.

It was not mine.

Then I noticed the lid was not completely closed.

A sheet of paper protruded from the side.

I pushed it inward.

As I did, I saw my own name.

I stopped.

The document was facing downward.

I should have walked away.

Instead, I lifted the lid.

The top page contained a typed heading.

ESTATE VALUE ESTIMATE—MARGARET HALE.

My stomach dropped.

Below it was a handwritten list.

City house.

Cottage.

Retirement accounts.

Insurance.

Possible investments.

At the bottom, in Sarah’s handwriting, were three words.

David’s expected share.

I stood in the garage, holding a document that had never been meant for me to see.

And beneath it were pages of calculations.

They had not merely wondered what I might leave behind.

Someone had already assigned a value to my death.

<a
