reached the car, I called her name.

She looked back.

“The twins.”

Her face crumpled.

“They’re with David.”

“I know.”

“Whatever happens between you two, do not make them carry messages.”

“I won’t.”

“Do not tell them legal details.”

“I won’t.”

“And do not ask them to defend you.”

She covered her mouth.

“I would never.”

I held her gaze.

“Good.”

She got into the car and left.

Emma stepped onto the porch.

“You were calm.”

“I didn’t feel calm.”

“You scared me.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because you sounded like Dad.”

I almost smiled.

“Apparently everyone does lately.”

The next morning, Margaret called early.

She had spoken with the lender’s counsel.

“They are taking your denial seriously.”

“What does that mean?”

“They will not currently treat you as a source of repayment.”

Relief flooded me so suddenly I had to sit down.

“Currently?”

“There is an investigation underway.”

“Into Sarah?”

“Into the documents and underwriting process.”

I took a breath.

“What should I do?”

“For now, nothing beyond preserving records and responding through me.”

“What about the second letter?”

Silence.

“How do you know about a second letter?”

“Sarah told me.”

Margaret’s voice sharpened.

“Do not discuss details with her again without telling me first.”

“I didn’t invite her.”

“I understand.”

I explained what happened.

Margaret wrote everything down.

Then she said, “I want the second document.”

“So do I.”

“I’ll arrange it through counsel.”

“Margaret.”

“Yes?”

“If she admits forging both, what happens?”

“That depends on who investigates and what the lenders decide.”

“And me?”

“You will eventually have decisions to make too.”

I knew what she meant.

Whether to cooperate with prosecution.

Whether to pursue civil claims.

Whether to forgive.

Those were not the same decision.

That distinction stayed with me all day.

By afternoon, David called.

“Sarah told me she went to see you.”

“Yes.”

“I’m furious.”

“I assumed.”

“She shouldn’t have.”

“No.”

“She admitted the second letter?”

“Yes.”

He swore.

“Did you know?”

“No.”

“Do you believe her?”

“I believe there are at least two.”

His breathing changed.

“She’s coming home tonight to get clothes.”

“That is between you.”

“I know.”

He became quiet.

“Mom, can I ask you something?”

“Yes.”

“If you report her, will you tell me first?”

I stared at the yard.

“Why?”

“So I can prepare the kids.”

That was a fair reason.

“Yes.”

“Thank you.”

I almost ended the call.

Then he said, “I think we’re done.”

I knew what he meant.

His marriage.

“Have you decided?”

“No.”

“That sounds different.”

“I don’t know if I can come back from this.”

“That may be true.”

He breathed out.

“I thought you’d tell me to forgive her.”

“Why?”

“You always want the family together.”

I looked toward the cottage door.

Once, he was right.

I had wanted togetherness more than honesty.

Not anymore.

“I want the family healthy.”

He said nothing.

“Sometimes those are the same thing.”

“And sometimes?”

“They aren’t.”

He was quiet.

“Okay.”

After we hung up, I walked outside.

The tomato plants were heavy with green fruit.

I picked one small red tomato from the lowest branch.

The first ripe one.

I carried it inside, sliced it, added salt, and ate it over the sink.

My husband would have laughed at how proud I felt.

That evening, Margaret emailed me a copy of the second support letter.

The signature was the same copied version.

The amount was smaller.

The language was more aggressive.

It said I had agreed not merely to provide support if needed, but to make funds available on request.

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

At the bottom was a date.

I recognized it immediately.

The letter had supposedly been signed by me on a Tuesday afternoon six months earlier.

I opened my calendar.

That Tuesday, I had been somewhere impossible to dispute.

A hospital two states away.

Sitting beside Emma while she underwent a minor surgery.

I had parking receipts.

Hotel records.

Phone photographs.

And David had called me there.

I stared at the date.

For the first time since the forgery surfaced, I felt something other than fear.

Certainty.

Sarah had not merely copied my signature.

She had accidentally given me proof that I could not possibly have signed the document.

I called Margaret.

“I can prove it.”

She listened while I explained.

Then she said, “Good.”

I expected relief in her voice.

Instead, she sounded almost grim.

“Why doesn’t that sound like good news?”

“Because if the evidence is that clear, the issue may shift very quickly from whether the letter is valid to who knowingly submitted a false one.”

I sat in silence.

Outside, night settled over the cottage.

The central problem had changed.

I was no longer worried that Sarah’s forgery could take my property.

I was beginning to understand that the truth might take apart her life.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The Date on Sarah’s Forged Letter Cleared My Name, but
