cruel.

Then he said, “I think I finally understand why.”

I said nothing.

“If you fix it, I don’t have to.”

There it was.

Not the debt.

The pattern.

I reached across the table and touched his hand.

“I will help you survive consequences.”

He looked at me.

“I will not erase them.”

His eyes filled.

“That sounds like Dad.”

“Apparently your father left me a lot of material.”

David laughed weakly.

Then he cried.

Quietly.

I stayed beside him.

I did not tell him everything would be fine.

I did not know that.

I did not offer money.

I did not tell him what to do about Sarah.

I simply stayed.

Eventually he wiped his face.

“I need to go pick up the twins.”

“Go.”

He stood.

At the door, he stopped.

“I found something else.”

My stomach sank.

“What?”

“In the lender file.”

He pulled an envelope from his jacket.

“My attorney said I could show you.”

Inside was a photocopy of a handwritten note.

Sarah’s writing.

Three lines.

Margaret owns both properties outright.

Estimated estate exceeds loan exposure.

David is sole son and likely primary beneficiary.

I stared at the final sentence.

David spoke behind me.

“She knew Emma existed.”

“Yes.”

“She deliberately wrote sole son.”

“Yes.”

“She made it sound like I was the only child who mattered.”

“Yes.”

He sat down again.

“I asked her why.”

“What did she say?”

“That sons usually get property.”

I looked at him.

He laughed bitterly.

“I told her Dad would come back from the grave just to argue with that.”

Despite everything, I smiled.

Then I turned the page over.

There was something printed on the back.

A partial email.

One sentence caught my attention.

Client indicates mother has discussed transferring cottage to son once renovation is complete.

I read it again.

“I never said that.”

“I know.”

“Who told them I did?”

David’s face hardened.

“Sarah says she didn’t.”

For the first time since the forgery surfaced, her denial did not fit the evidence.

If Sarah had not told the lender I planned to transfer the cottage, somebody else had.

And whoever it was knew enough about my property to make the lie sound believable.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: A False Promise About the Cottage Led Beyond Sarah, and the Person
