weeks later, the business closed its doors.

David called me from the empty office.

“It’s over.”

I heard an echo behind him.

“Are you alone?”

“Yes.”

“Where are the employees?”

“Gone.”

“Were they paid?”

“Yes.”

That mattered.

“What now?”

“We sell what we can.”

“And the house?”

“Listing it next week.”

I closed my eyes.

“Where will you live?”

“I’ll rent.”

“The twins?”

“They’ll have a home.”

“I know.”

“I mean I’ll make sure.”

His voice hardened with something I had not heard in months.

Responsibility.

Not expectation.

“Good.”

Then he said, “Sarah and I are separating.”

I sat down.

“For now?”

“I don’t know.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I’m not asking you to fix it.”

“I know.”

He laughed softly.

“Progress.”

“Yes.”

After we hung up, I walked outside.

The tomatoes had finally begun ripening all at once.

Too many for one person.

I filled a basket.

For a moment, I considered taking some to David.

Then I stopped.

Not because generosity was dangerous.

Because I needed to know why I was doing it.

Did he need tomatoes?

No.

Did I want to see him?

Yes.

That was enough.

I drove to the empty business office.

David was carrying boxes toward his car when I arrived.

He looked at the basket.

“What’s that?”

“Tomatoes.”

He laughed.

“You drove forty-five minutes to bring me tomatoes?”

“No.”

“What did you drive here for?”

I looked at my son.

“To see you.”

His face changed.

Then he hugged me.

For the first time in years, neither of us needed anything from the other.

Behind him, the business he had tried desperately to preserve was empty.

Ahead of us, neither of us knew what came next.

But the lie that had kept it alive was finally dying with it.

<a
