shameful.

When the twins came home, David sat with them.

I stayed nearby.

He told them their mother had made serious mistakes involving business papers.

He told them adults were working out what happened.

He told them she loved them.

He did not call her bad.

He did not excuse her.

He did not blame me.

The older twin asked, “Is Mom going to jail?”

David’s face tightened.

“I don’t know.”

The younger one began crying.

I opened my arms.

He came to me.

Later, after they slept, David and I sat at the small kitchen table.

“I used to think losing the house would be the worst thing that could happen.”

I looked around.

“Is it?”

“No.”

“What is?”

He stared toward the hallway where his children slept.

“Having them learn their parents aren’t who they thought.”

I thought about that.

“They don’t need perfect parents.”

He looked at me.

“They need parents who stop lying.”

His eyes filled.

“Yeah.”

A week later, Sarah was released while the case proceeded.

She began counseling.

So did David.

Separately.

Neither knew whether the marriage would survive.

For the first time, I stopped wondering.

It was not my marriage.

My relationship with each of them would have to stand on its own.

Then, one Friday afternoon, David appeared at the cottage carrying a sealed envelope.

“I need to give you something.”

“What?”

He placed it on the table.

Inside was a cashier’s check.

The remaining balance of the business loan.

I stared at the amount.

“How?”

“Sale of some equipment. What was left after priority debts.”

“You need this.”

“Yes.”

“Then why give it to me?”

“Because it’s yours.”

I looked at him.

He swallowed.

“I’m done building my life around things that belong to somebody else.”

The words were imperfect.

But they were his.

I folded the check back into the envelope.

“Thank you.”

He nodded.

Then he looked toward the cottage window.

“I don’t know what you’re doing with this place.”

“No.”

“And I’m not asking.”

I smiled.

“Good.”

He smiled too.

As he left, I realized something.

The loan repayment did not repair our relationship.

It did something more important.

It proved David had finally begun separating love from entitlement.

And that meant whatever came next between us had a chance of being real.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: I Thought Repayment Had Finally Closed the Old Wound, Until David Asked Me to Attend a Meeting About Sarah’s Future

The business auction took place on a Wednesday.
