Artificial. Metallic. The sort of odor that made you inhale twice because your brain could not decide whether it belonged to perfume, cleaning fluid, or something you should not be breathing.

“Is something wrong?”

Vincent Moretti stood several steps ahead of me, one hand resting on the polished brass handle of a bedroom door. Photographs had prepared me for a sharp-featured billionaire who looked comfortable commanding boardrooms. The man in front of me looked like someone who had not slept properly in months.

“I’m not sure,” I said.

His expression tightened immediately.

That reaction told me more than the expensive suit or the armed guard downstairs. Vincent had spent eighteen months hearing uncertainty from doctors. He had developed no patience for it.

Twenty minutes earlier, I had been sitting in his study explaining why a thirty-four-year-old nanny with eight years of experience caring for medically fragile children might notice something specialists missed.

Now I was wondering whether I had found it before meeting either boy.

“Where exactly do you smell it?” he asked.

I walked backward a few steps.

The scent faded.

Forward again.

Stronger.

There were two adjoining bedrooms at the end of the corridor. Between them sat an ornate ventilation grille designed to disappear into the paneled wall.

I stopped beside it.

“Here.”

Vincent leaned closer and inhaled.

His brow furrowed.

“I don’t smell anything.”

“That doesn’t mean it isn’t there.”

A soft thump sounded behind us.

Mrs. Harper, the house manager, had dropped an armful of folded towels.

She crouched immediately, gathering them with hands that shook hard enough to make the fabric tremble.

Vincent noticed.

So did I.

He had introduced Mrs. Harper downstairs as someone who had managed the estate for nearly fifteen years. Until that moment, she had been composed almost to the point of invisibility.

Now she would not look at the vent.

I stored that away.

Twenty-four hours earlier, I had known none of these people.

The agency had called while I was finishing dinner in my small apartment.

“Live-in position,” my recruiter had said. “Two seven-year-old boys. The salary is extremely generous.”

“How generous?”

She told me.

I thought she had added a zero by mistake.

Then she gave me the name.

Vincent Moretti.

Anyone who read financial news knew him. He had built a sprawling fortune in property, restaurants, logistics, and private investments before turning forty. Articles described him as disciplined, aggressive, private, and almost impossible to surprise.

Yet when Mrs. Harper had brought me into his study that afternoon, medical reports covered his desk in uneven stacks.

That surprised me.

So did the exhaustion in his face.

He skipped pleasantries.

“You’ve worked with sick children?”

“With children whose illnesses affected daily life.”

“For how long?”

“Eight years.”

He pushed a thick folder across the desk.

“My sons have been getting weaker for eighteen months.”

Inside were reports on Lucas and Leo Moretti.
