them.”

Vincent’s voice was steady now.

“You misunderstood me.”

The laugh stopped.

“Test me.”

Silence.

Then Richard said, “Check your phone.”

The call ended.

Coordinates appeared.

An old riverside freight depot.

Twenty-eight miles south.

Police mobilized instantly.

Then another message arrived.

COME ALONE OR HE DOESN’T LEAVE.

Vincent looked at Torres.

She already knew he planned to ignore that.

At the estate, I received a call from Vincent before they moved.

“Keep Lucas inside.”

“Obviously.”

“Do not tell him where we’re going.”

“Vincent.”

He went quiet.

“Bring Leo back.”

“I will.”

“You cannot promise that.”

“I already promised Lucas.”

His voice cracked.

“I’m running out of promises I can afford to break.”

Before I could answer, Lucas appeared behind me.

“Dad?”

Vincent heard.

I gave him the phone.

Lucas held it tightly.

“Did you find him?”

“We know where he is.”

“Is Richard there?”

“Probably.”

“Is Leo okay?”

“Yes.”

“How do you know?”

“I heard him.”

Lucas closed his eyes.

Then he said something neither of us expected.

“Ask him about the moon.”

Vincent frowned.

“What?”

“Leo.”

“Why?”

“If he’s scared and pretending, ask about the moon.”

“What does that mean?”

“It’s our code.”

I crouched beside Lucas.

“What code?”

“If one of us can’t tell the truth, we ask whether the moon is blue.”

Vincent went silent.

“If he says yes?”

“Bad.”

“If no?”

“Safe.”

I looked at Lucas.

“You two have a lot of codes.”

He shrugged.

“We get bored.”

Vincent almost laughed.

Almost.

“I’ll ask him.”

He ended the call.

The convoy moved toward the river.

At 3:42 a.m., Vincent’s phone rang again.

Leo.

No Richard speaking first this time.

“Dad?”

“I’m here.”

“Are you coming?”

“Yes.”

Vincent looked at Torres.

Then remembered.

“Leo.”

“What?”

“Can you see the moon?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

“Is it blue?”

A longer pause.

Everyone in the vehicle stopped breathing.

Then Leo whispered, “Yes.”

The call cut.

Vincent looked at Torres.

“That means Richard is lying.”

“About what?”

Vincent stared through the windshield toward the distant river lights.

“Everything.”

<a
