was that.”

Dad’s next message arrived.

She always leaves out the ugly parts.

Then:

Ask Michael what he agreed to in exchange for getting you back.

I turned toward him.

Michael stopped struggling.

His face told me Dad had found another real wound to press.

“What did you agree to?”

He looked at Mom.

She shook her head.

“Michael, no.”

I stepped closer.

“What did Dad make you agree to?”

Michael’s voice came low.

“To stop looking for Claire.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“In 2001 Richard offered me a deal.”

“What deal?”

“If I disappeared from your life and stopped investigating Claire’s placement, he promised not to hurt you.”

My hands went cold.

“You chose me.”

Michael shut his eyes.

“I thought Claire was safe with a family.”

“You chose one daughter.”

“Yes.”

The word broke something open.

Mom whispered, “We all did.”

Dad’s final message arrived before I could answer.

Now you understand.

Everybody picked a favorite.

I’m just the only one honest enough to admit it.

I stared at the screen until the letters blurred.

Then another photograph came through.

Claire sat inside a cabin.

Alive.

Unrestrained.

Looking directly at the camera.

Dad stood behind her.

Claire held a blue folder.

On its cover was my name.

Richard’s message read:

She knows what you are.

And she wants to meet you without the police.

Claire raised one hand in the photograph.

On her wrist was a bracelet.

A tiny crescent moon hung from it.

The match to Mom’s necklace.

Mom made a choking sound.

“I gave that to her when she was born.”

Claire had kept it for twenty-seven years.

Which meant someone in her adoptive family had known enough of the truth to preserve at least one piece of where she came from.

And Dad had finally brought both halves of the family he shattered back into the same game.
