cuffed.

I watched him press his face into the dirt while agents recovered Dad's ledger page by page.

He began laughing.

“You still don't have it.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“The final page.”

My chest tightened.

He turned his head enough to see me.

“Ernest tore it out before I got the ledger.”

“Where is it?”

Vance smiled.

“Ask Ray.”

My stomach dropped.

Then his expression changed.

He looked beyond me.

Toward Matthew.

“Or ask the boy what his father put inside the dog collar.”

Matthew went rigid.

I turned to him.

Bruno's collar.

Thomas Reed had said Bruno arrived without tags.

But he had never said the collar itself was empty.

Matthew whispered, “Dad's name was inside.”

“What?”

“The collar had a little pocket.”

I remembered it.

A leather collar Dad bought because it held identification information beneath a folded flap.

Investigators had searched Reed's stored belongings.

But Bruno was still wearing a newer collar.

Where was the original?

Reed had kept it.

In a box with old veterinary records.

Federal agents recovered it before evening.

Inside the cracked leather flap was a strip of waterproof paper.

Not the final ledger page.

Something smaller.

A list of six names.

The first five were people Dad had identified as witnesses.

The sixth stopped me cold.

TERESA MENDOZA.

Beside Mom's name, Dad had written:

SHE HEARD VANCE THAT NIGHT.

I stared at the sentence.

Mom had told us she heard Ray.

Salazar.

Another man.

She claimed she never saw his face.

But Dad's note said she heard Vance.

My mother had known Samuel Vance was inside our house the night my father died.

And for six years, she had never told me.

Click here to continue reading: PART
