network or burn it.”

Rebecca had chosen burn.

Weller had approved.

At 2:41 a.m., agents entered Weller's Washington residence.

Empty.

His government phone was found smashed.

His personal plane remained grounded.

Border systems showed no exit.

Then the annex servers revealed one final active location.

A private hangar outside the city.

Owned through Chairman Holdings.

Agents moved.

Kim refused to take us there.

Good.

I had finally learned that being present did not make me useful.

We waited in a secure federal office while the operation unfolded over radio.

At 3:18 a.m., agents surrounded the hangar.

At 3:23, Weller surrendered.

Alone.

Rebecca was not there.

“Where is she?” Alvarez demanded through an agent's body microphone.

Weller laughed.

“You still don't understand her.”

Then he said something that made every person in our room turn toward Matthew.

“She doesn't want the archive anymore.”

My skin tightened.

“What does she want?”

Weller answered.

“The boy.”

Mom stood instantly.

Kim moved between Matthew and the door as if Rebecca might appear through it.

“Why?”

Weller's voice came through the radio.

“Because Ernest made him the only living authentication.”

I grabbed Matthew.

“No one gets near him.”

Then Weller added the part that changed everything.

“Rebecca already knows where you're taking Teresa.”

My heart stopped.

We had assumed we were the target.

But Mom had been scheduled for a medical examination and formal release processing at dawn before entering long-term protection.

The appointment was in a secure federal clinic.

Known to only a handful of officials.

Weller had known.

Rebecca had known.

Mom stood.

“She isn't coming for Matthew here.”

I understood.

“She expects us to move him with you.”

The clinic was bait.

Or intended to be.

Kim called immediately.

The appointment was canceled.

The clinic secured.

No transport.

Then Matthew spoke.

“What if we go anyway?”

Every adult said no at once.

He frowned.

“I didn't mean me.”

I stared.

A decoy.

The idea was insane.

Also potentially useful.

Kim looked at Alvarez through the video connection.

Alvarez looked back.

Neither dismissed it.

Within thirty minutes, they built the operation.

An armored federal van would follow the original schedule.

A woman resembling Mom would sit inside.

A smaller figure would be represented through thermal blankets and positioning.

Tracking information would be allowed to leak through the compromised system.

We would remain elsewhere.

The convoy left at 5:10 a.m.

Rebecca took the bait.

At 5:37, surveillance spotted a dark SUV following from two exits back.

At 5:42, a second vehicle joined.

At 5:48, the convoy entered a controlled tunnel approach near the clinic.

Agents closed both ends.

The dark SUV accelerated.

Then stopped.

The driver surrendered.

Not Rebecca.

Another contractor.

The second vehicle reversed.

Federal vehicles blocked it.

Agents pulled the driver out.

Still not Rebecca.

“Where is she?” I whispered.

Then Mom looked at the clinic security feed.

“Inside.”

Everyone turned.

A woman in medical scrubs crossed a hallway behind the secured reception desk.

Dark hair.

Mask.

Badge.

Claire gasped.

“Rebecca.”

She had anticipated the decoy.

She let contractors follow the van while she entered the destination first.

Agents converged.

Rebecca saw them.

She ran.

Through radiology.

Down a stairwell.

Into an underground service corridor.

The body cameras showed flashes of her.

Fast.

Controlled.

No panic.

She reached the loading dock.

An agent shouted.

“Stop!”

Rebecca turned.

Gun in hand.

For one second no one fired.

Then she pointed the weapon—not at agents.

At herself.

Claire screamed from our room.

“No!”

Rebecca smiled faintly.

And said, “You don't get the ending.”

Then a man stepped from behind a loading pillar and struck her arm downward with a metal bar.

The gun fired into concrete.

Agents tackled her.

The man raised both hands.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Limping.

Miguel stared at the screen.

“No.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

He moved closer.

The man who had stopped Rebecca was not an agent.

Miguel whispered the name.

“Ben Castillo.”

I stared.

Officer Castillo.

The patrolman whose supposed death had helped bury everything.

The man whose widow had preserved the tape.

“He's dead,” I said.

Miguel shook his head.

“No.”

On the body camera, the older man looked toward the agents.

Then spoke.

“My name is Benjamin Castillo.”

Everyone in our room went silent.

“I have been waiting six years to testify.”

<a
