paperwork.

That was almost comforting.

Paperwork has edges.

Dates.

Signatures.

Lists.

After days of fear built from shadows and unanswered questions, I welcomed anything that could be placed in a folder.

Ms. Park sent formal notices disputing Mary Lou’s financial liability.

She also documented Han’s threats, the attempted transfer from my bank account, the forged agreement involving Daniel, and the possibility that company records had been fabricated.

Mary Lou gave a statement.

So did I.

Kang Jun provided an affidavit admitting his role in recruiting Mary Lou and identifying the duplicate account system.

Watching him sign it affected my daughter more than she admitted.

He was not asking forgiveness.

He was placing his own name beside the wrongdoing.

That mattered.

Not enough to erase anything.

Enough to matter.

Daniel Weiss received copies of the files through three separate channels.

One encrypted.

One through his editor.

One with outside counsel.

“If anything disappears now,” he told us, “too many people will notice.”

That was the point.

Secrecy had protected the system.

Attention would become our first real shield.

The bank froze the outgoing transfer pending investigation.

My nine hundred sixty thousand dollars remained technically mine.

For the moment.

Han’s people filed no formal criminal complaint against Mary Lou.

Ms. Park believed the public legal record and Daniel’s involvement had changed their calculation.

“They prefer leverage,” she said. “Not scrutiny.”

Mary Lou’s passport remained valid.

A flight was booked.

Seoul to Chicago.

Chicago to St. Louis.

The night before departure, Kang Jun came to the hotel.

Mary Lou almost refused to see him.

Then she opened the door.

He stood in the hallway holding a small box.

“What?”

“This belongs to you.”

She took it.

Inside was a wedding ring.

The ring from the people who had once known each other deeply enough that death still mattered.

“I intend to,” he said.

He left.

The flight home felt unreal.

Mary Lou sat
