better.”

“It is from you.”

Rain streaked the window behind her.

For several minutes they said nothing.

The board meeting would begin at nine.

Nine directors.

Martin would attend as trust counsel.

Luna’s corporate lawyer would attend.

Derek had demanded Adam appear.

His stated reason was simple.

If the marriage was real, the husband should be willing to answer questions.

Adam had agreed.

Luna hated that.

“You can still refuse.”

“No.”

“They will ask about your debt.”

“I know.”

“Your father.”

“I near the elevators.

People pretended not to stare.

Adam reached for Luna’s hand.

She looked down.

He held it.

Not for the board.

Not for appearances.

She squeezed once.

The elevator doors opened.

Derek stood inside.

Of course he did.

Adam almost laughed.

“Morning.”

Derek’s eyes moved to their joined hands.

“Still performing.”

Luna entered without responding.

Adam followed.

The doors closed.

The three rode upward in silence.

At floor thirty-four, Derek spoke.

“You should have taken the exit.”

Luna looked at the floor numbers.

“So should you.”

He smiled.

“You really think the board will care how I got the contract?”

“Yes.”

“No.”

The elevator rose.

“They’ll care that you purchased a husband to steal control.”

Adam turned.

“Interesting choice of word.”

Derek looked at him.

“What?”

“Steal.”

The elevator chimed.

Doors opened.

Adam smiled.

“See you inside.”

The boardroom overlooked the city.

Long black table.

Nine seats.

Two attorneys.

One court reporter.

Martin at the far end with the trust binder.

Adam sat beside Luna.

Derek sat opposite them.

Nolan was not present.

That alone mattered.

At nine exactly, board chair Margaret Caldwell called the meeting to order.

She was in her sixties, sharp-eyed, silver-haired, and famous for ending discussions before people realized they had been dismissed.

“This meeting concerns allegations regarding Luna Sterling’s satisfaction of family trust conditions and whether related conduct affects her authority within Sterling Marketing Solutions.”

She looked toward Luna.

“You understand the seriousness.”

“Yes.”

Margaret turned to Derek.

“You requested the review.”

“I did.”

“Present your concern.”

Derek stood.

He did not look nervous.

He distributed copies of the marriage agreement.

Adam watched directors read sections already familiar from the leak.

Derek spoke carefully.

“My sister entered into a paid arrangement with a financially distressed employee for the purpose of satisfying a trust condition that determines control of this company.”

No one interrupted.

“He was offered debt relief and substantial compensation. Their relationship was concealed. The board was permitted to believe the marriage resulted from a genuine personal relationship.”

Margaret asked, “Was the board required to approve the marriage?”

“No.”

“Was the marriage disclosed when disclosure became legally necessary?”

“Yes.”

Derek paused.

“That misses the point.”

“Then make the point precisely.”

His expression tightened.

“The marriage was manufactured.”

Margaret looked toward Luna.

“Response?”

Luna stood.

“The contract is real.”

Murmurs.

Adam saw Derek smile.

Luna continued.

“I approached Adam with a one-year agreement. I offered to resolve documented financial obligations and provide compensation. He accepted.”

One director leaned back in disbelief.

Another whispered to the woman beside him.

Derek remained pleased.

Luna did not stop.

“I am not going to insult this board by pretending our marriage began romantically.”

Adam watched her hands.

Steady.

“But beginning under unusual circumstances does not make the marriage invalid, nor does it establish that I deceived this company.”

Derek interrupted.

“You bought him.”

Margaret looked sharply at him.

“You will have your turn.”

Luna continued.

“We reside together. We are legally married. Our personal and financial lives are integrated. We have represented ourselves publicly as spouses.”

Derek laughed.

“You rehearsed a fake courtship.”

“Yes.”

The direct answer surprised everyone.

Luna turned toward him.

“Because I expected you to attack.”

His smile faded slightly.

Margaret asked Adam to stand.

He did.

One director, Paul Rennick, opened Adam’s financial summary.

“Mr. Bennett, were you more than fifty thousand dollars in debt when you signed this agreement?”

“Yes.”

“Were you facing eviction?”

“Yes.”

“Was your mother experiencing financial difficulty?”

“Yes.”

“Did Ms. Sterling know those facts?”

“Yes.”

“Did that influence your decision?”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Derek leaned back.

Adam continued before anyone could speak.

“I would not have signed the agreement if I hadn’t needed the money.”

Luna looked toward him.

Adam stayed focused on the board.

“I was desperate.”

The word no longer hurt.

“My father had died after a long illness. I had taken on debt. I was trying to help my mother. I was behind on rent.”

He looked around the table.

“I’m not embarrassed by any of that anymore.”

Derek’s face tightened.

Adam continued.

“I accepted an arrangement that gave both Luna and me something we needed. That is the truth.”

Director Rennick asked, “And you expect us to believe it became a real marriage afterward?”

Adam looked at Luna.

Then back at him.

“I don’t care what you believe about our private feelings.”

That caused another stir.

“What I care about is whether you treat financial hardship as proof someone can’t make a meaningful choice.”

Rennick’s expression changed.

Adam sat.

Derek stood immediately.

“This is sentimental distraction.”

Martin finally spoke.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

He opened the original trust.

“This meeting has proceeded under an incomplete assumption.”

Derek’s face changed slightly.

Martin continued.

“Failure by Luna Sterling to satisfy the marital condition does not automatically vest permanent voting control in Derek Sterling.”

The room went silent.

Derek stared.

“What?”

Martin read the original clause.

Then the suitability condition.

Then the interference prohibition.

Derek’s confidence cracked for the first time.

“That provision was superseded.”

“No,” Martin said.

“It isn’t in the summary.”

“The summary is not the controlling document.”

Derek looked furious.

Margaret leaned forward.

“Explain the interference condition.”

Martin did.

A successor could not deliberately obstruct another beneficiary’s satisfaction of the trust.

Could not manipulate conditions to trigger disqualification.

Could not misuse family or company resources for personal succession advantage.

Margaret turned slowly toward Derek.

“Are there allegations you did those things?”

Luna answered.

“Yes.”

She placed a folder on the table.

Derek stared at it.

The first record concerned the surveillance device.

Purchased through the family office.

Authorized by Nolan Pierce.

Data routed to Sterling Strategic Holdings.

Derek interrupted.

“I never ordered that camera.”

Luna said, “Then you should be very concerned Nolan routed the footage to your company.”

Derek’s face hardened.

The next documents showed Adam’s denied hardship request.

Funds available.

Nolan’s initials.

Then the candidate file metadata.

Adam’s name listed months before Luna selected him.

Several directors began whispering.

Margaret stopped them with one look.

“Continue.”

Luna presented the candidate-list evidence from Evan.

Not as proven fact.

As testimony awaiting formal verification.

Derek laughed.

“Evan Carlisle is unreliable.”

A voice came from the door.

“Interesting.”

Everyone turned.

Evan entered with corporate counsel.

Derek’s face went still.

Luna had not known Martin planned this.

Neither had Adam.

Evan sat at the far end.

“I provided a sworn statement this morning.”

Derek stared at him.

“You idiot.”

Margaret’s voice sharpened.

“Mr. Sterling.”

Evan described the list.

Six financially vulnerable potential candidates.

Questions Derek had asked.

The plan to challenge Luna’s marriage regardless of whom she chose.

Then Redmont.

That changed the room more than everything else.

Margaret leaned forward.

“Say that again.”

Evan did.

“Derek told me that once he obtained operational control, he intended to open acquisition negotiations with Redmont Global.”

Derek stood.

“This meeting is over.”

“No,” Margaret said.

Everyone froze.

“You requested this meeting.”

He stared at her.

“You will remain seated.”

He did.

Barely.

Another director asked, “Have you had contact with Redmont?”

Derek said nothing.

The director repeated the question.

“I’ve had general industry conversations.”

“About acquiring Sterling?”

“No binding discussions.”

“That wasn’t the question.”

Derek looked toward Luna.

“You planned this.”

She stared back.

“You started it.”

Margaret asked corporate counsel whether Derek had disclosed acquisition conversations.

“No.”

“Was he required to?”

“If discussions involved potential change of control, yes.”

Derek snapped, “They were preliminary.”

Margaret’s expression became glacial.

“Then you should have disclosed them preliminarily.”

Derek’s advantage was collapsing.

Adam could see it.

But not enough.

Not yet.

The evidence against Nolan was strong.

The connection to Derek was strong.

The sale plan was damaging.

Still, Derek could claim Nolan acted independently.

He could claim Evan misunderstood.

He could claim the candidate list was theoretical.

Adam remembered something.

The elevator.

Derek asking where he was from.

His parents.

Before Luna noticed him.

Adam raised his hand slightly.

Margaret looked at him.

“Yes?”

“I have a question for Derek.”

Derek laughed.

“You’re not a director.”

Margaret said, “Ask.”

Adam stood.

“When did you first learn my father was ill?”

Derek stared.

“I didn’t.”

“When did you first learn I applied to the hardship fund?”

“I didn’t.”

“When did you first learn I was in debt?”

“After Luna investigated you.”

Adam nodded.

“Then you won’t mind if we check your communications with Nolan from nine months ago.”

Derek’s face barely moved.

Barely.

Adam saw it.

So did Luna.

Margaret did too.

Adam continued.

“Because my hardship application was denied by Nolan despite available funds.”

Derek said nothing.

“Then months later, a file appeared marking me as an approved marriage candidate and saying my financial pressure should increase.”

Derek’s eyes turned cold.

Adam stepped closer to the table.

“So either Nolan independently decided to worsen the finances of a junior employee you had already questioned about his family…”

He paused.

“…or you told him to.”

“Careful.”

Derek’s voice was low.

Adam ignored him.

“Which one do you want the board to believe?”

Derek stood.

“You have no idea who you’re talking to.”

Adam smiled faintly.

“Actually, I think that’s the first thing about this situation I understand completely.”

Derek looked toward Luna.

Then the board.

Then Martin.

His control slipped.

Only briefly.

But enough.

“You think she chose you?”

The room went silent.

Adam did not respond.

Derek stepped toward him.

“She chose a file.”

Luna stood.

“Sit down.”

Derek ignored her.

“You were selected because you were broke, clean, and forgettable.”

Adam felt the words.

He did not react.

Derek continued.

“You were supposed to take the money and disappear after twelve months.”

Luna froze.

Margaret looked sharply at him.

Adam asked quietly, “Supposed to?”

Derek realized too late.

No one spoke.

Adam repeated.

“Supposed to according to whom?”

Derek’s jaw tightened.

Adam took one step closer.

“You just said what was supposed to happen.”

Derek looked around the table.

He had trapped himself.

Luna saw it too.

“So there was a plan,” she said.

Derek pointed at Adam.

“He means nothing.”

Something in Luna broke.

Not emotionally.

Strategically.

She stopped protecting him.

She turned to the directors.

“My brother just confirmed knowledge of the expected outcome of a candidate-selection process he previously denied knowing existed.”

Derek swore.

Martin said, “For the record, yes.”

The court reporter’s hands moved quickly.

Margaret looked at Derek for a long time.

Then at corporate counsel.

“I want all Sterling Strategic Holdings communications preserved immediately.”

Derek laughed in disbelief.

“You can’t seize my company.”

“No.”

Margaret’s voice remained calm.

“But this board can preserve Sterling Marketing communications involving you, suspend your access to confidential systems, and refer evidence of possible fiduciary breaches to independent counsel.”

Derek’s face changed.

Margaret looked around the table.

“I move that no change in Luna Sterling’s operational authority occur today.”

One hand rose.

Then another.

Then a
