safe.

Luna looked toward the piano.

“You know what Derek said was almost right.”

Adam waited.

“I have treated Sterling like my father.”

“How?”

“If I could preserve the company, I could preserve something about him.”

She walked toward the piano and lifted the cover.

Dustless keys.

Untouched for years.

“He used to play when he couldn’t sleep.”

Adam leaned against the instrument.

“Was he good?”

“No.”

Luna smiled faintly.

“He played the same six songs badly.”

“Tragic.”

“He knew.”

She pressed one key.

A clean note filled the room.

Then another.

She stopped.

“I spent years thinking keeping this place meant keeping him.”

Adam looked around the penthouse.

“Do you?”

“No.”

She sounded surprised by her own answer.

Adam moved closer.

“That seems important.”

“It is.”

Her phone rang.

Margaret.

Luna answered.

Her expression changed within seconds.

“When?”

Pause.

“Send it.”

She ended the call.

Adam frowned.

“What?”

“The trustees finished preliminary review.”

“Already?”

“They had Nolan’s testimony, Henry’s letter, and today’s forensic findings.”

“Okay.”

Luna stared at her phone.

Adam stepped closer.

“What did they decide?”

She looked at him.

“Derek is provisionally disqualified from succession.”

Adam exhaled.

That should have felt like victory.

Luna did not look victorious.

“And you?”

She hesitated.

“My marital condition has been referred for final determination.”

His stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?”

“It means Derek can’t inherit.”

“But you haven’t secured control.”

“No.”

Her phone buzzed.

The trustee memorandum arrived.

Luna opened it.

Adam read beside her.

One paragraph stood out.

The trustees accepted that the marriage was legally valid but questioned whether a compensated arrangement entered principally to satisfy the trust fulfilled Henry Sterling’s intended requirement.

A hearing would be held.

Adam looked at Luna.

“When?”

She scrolled.

Her face went still.

“Monday.”

Three days.

The Redmont threat had weakened.

Derek’s path to control was collapsing.

But the question at the center of everything remained.

Not whether Adam and Luna were legally married.

Not whether they lived together.

Not whether the contract existed.

The trustees wanted to know whether the marriage Henry demanded had ever become the thing he meant it to be.

Adam looked at Luna.

She looked back.

For once, neither of them had a strategy.

Because proving they loved each other to strangers might be harder than surviving every lie that had brought them together.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: The Trustees Asked the One Question Our Contract Could Never
