exhausting.”

“She did not.”

“Emotionally hazardous.”

“Adam.”

“Difficult to house-train.”

She narrowed her eyes.

He laughed.

Then told her the truth.

“She said loving me shouldn’t become another version of you disappearing into what someone else needs.”

Luna became quiet.

Adam looked back at the road.

“I think she’s right.”

“So do I.”

He glanced over.

“That was easy.”

“I’ve had a month.”

She looked out the window.

“I spent years performing competence for Dad.”

Then toward Adam.

“I don’t want to perform softness for you.”

“Please don’t.”

“I’m serious.”

“So am I.”

She reached for his hand.

“I’m still going to work too much.”

“I know.”

“I still like control.”

“Terrifyingly.”

“I’m still not going to enjoy discussing feelings before coffee.”

“Unreasonable but survivable.”

She smiled.

“And you?”

“I’m still poor in spirit.”

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“I’m tired.”

She laughed.

Then Adam became serious.

“I don’t want to become someone who stays quiet because he’s afraid you’ll think he’s ungrateful.”

Luna’s smile disappeared.

“Have you?”

“Sometimes.”

“When?”

He hesitated.

“The suits.”

Her eyebrows lifted.

“You hated the suits?”

“No. I hated feeling bought when you gave them to me.”

Luna looked genuinely hurt.

“You never said.”

“I know.”

“What else?”

“The first month, I kept saying yes to things because I thought refusing made me difficult.”

She stared.

“Adam.”

“I know.”

“I wanted you difficult.”

“I figured that out eventually.”

The car went quiet.

Then Luna said, “No more gratitude.”

He looked over.

“What?”

“You don’t owe me gratitude for the debt relief.”

“That’s complicated.”

“No.”

Her voice was firm.

“The agreement is gone.”

“I still benefited.”

“So did I.”

He thought about that.

Luna squeezed his hand.

“We’re not keeping score.”

Adam smiled.

“You hate losing score.”

“I’m growing.”

“Disturbing.”

When they reached the penthouse, Adam carried his old suitcase from the guest room into Luna’s bedroom.

Their bedroom.

He unpacked slowly.

Luna sat on the bed watching.

“You fold shirts badly.”

“I’m bringing authenticity.”

“You’re creating wrinkles.”

“Marriage.”

She threw a pillow at him.

He caught it.

Just as he had months earlier.

Only now there was no contract on the table.

No deadline determining where he slept.

No money waiting at the end.

Adam placed the last shirt in the drawer.

Then shut it.

Luna looked at the empty suitcase.

“So.”

“So?”

“You’re moved in.”

He walked toward her.

“Apparently.”

She looked suddenly nervous.

That surprised him.

“What?”

“If the trust vanished tomorrow…”

He smiled.

“We already answered this.”

“I know.”

“Still yes.”

She nodded.

He touched her face.

“And you?”

Luna took his hand.

“Still yes.”

Outside, Denver lights filled the windows.

For months, every major decision in their lives had been attached to a consequence someone else designed.

Henry’s trust.

Derek’s sabotage.

Redmont’s leverage.

The contract.

Now the choice was almost frighteningly ordinary.

Stay.

Or leave.

Adam stayed.

So did Luna.

<a
